A Denver man accused of aiming the beam of a laser pointer at a Denver police helicopter in March has been charged with a federal criminal charge.

Saher Mohammad Suleiman, 35, surrendered his passport Thursday to the State Department, according to a U.S. District Court document.

Suleiman , who was born in Jerusalem, has been released on his own recognizance, meaning that he did not have to pay bail. He must submit to DNA testing while awaiting trial.

Suleiman faces a penalty of up to five years in prison and a fine of $250,000. He could be placed on three years of supervised release following incarceration, according to court documents.
