Pilot Walks Away after Mooney Power Loss into LAL
Polk County Sheriff's Office and Lakeland Fire Department responded to the crash which happened around 3 p.m. in the 3900 block of Pipkin Creek Road. First responders arrived on-scene and discovered that the pilot and sole occupant, walked away from the crash with only minor injuries. The pilot's is 55-year-old Richard Simile, from Auburn, Alabama, who was practicing for the Sun 'n Fun fly in, which begins Tuesday at Lakeland Linder Airport. This happened just a couple of miles from my home due east of KLAL on the approach end of rwy 27. I'm reasonably certain I grabbed a quick photo of 8MR on his approach just a minute or two prior to the incident but the quality was so poor that I deleted it (before I knew about the crash). I do not recall seeing/hearing anything out of the ordinary. Glad to know the pilot survived in great shape.

Yes, but the outcome was at least positive. Mooney's Steel Roll Cage, AmSafe Seat Belt Air Bags and Richard's skill as a pilot, helped him to be able to run (not just walk) away from the crash site to call 911.
We will have to wait for the NTSB report, but this was a very new airplane, so power loss points to a problem with Continental's engine.

You know the old saying ... Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing. A great one is when you can use the airplane again.
Sorry mate but that saying is considered an insult to the profession. If it is a "crash landing due to an emergency situaion", ok.
Sorry to offend, my friend. Been flying about for a good long time now and never heard of anyone being insulted at this old saying. I first heard it when I was a student many years ago and have heard it repeated dozens of times since, even by several in "the profession". I suppose I can, however, imagine the circumstance that might lead one to receive it as an insult. Nevertheless I intended no offense, and I sincerely apologize to any who received it so.
No need to apologize, it is just that this absurd saying took root years ago.
