Thanks for the details!!
Carston L.
Was this photo taken at KEVB, KDAB, or another airport?
Greg Byington
That's a very nice picture, Uwe! And the ICAO Type Designator for any airship is: SHIP. There is no specific code for a Zeppelin NT. (At least, I couldn't find onw.)

This pic was taken in Germany, near the centre of Bad Homburg, a town 35 kilometers away from airport EDDF/ FRA

Does anyone ever give rides in a zeppelin? This may be a terrible question, but my father-in-law has had this on his "bucket" list since he was little. It is the only thing he has not been able to cross off the list at 83 years old. Any suggestions?

At least at the Pompano Beach, FL base Goodyear will occasionally give passenger rides, usually as a fund raising activity for local charities.

From 2023-09-23 till 2023-09-27 the " SHIP " was staying here, near Frankfurt for sightseening tours around our skyline.
45 minutes tour, Bad Homburg- Frankfurt- Bad Homburg, 450 euro per person per track.
Think 8 tours per day.
After this days the ship is back at the home base " Friedrichshafen ".
If every body needs more information for the future time, give me a message [email protected] or whatsapp.

I took a ride in a Goodyear Blimp during Indianapolis 500 festivities in the 1960"s. It crashed or went down along US 40 returning to Ohio after the race. I do not remember the year or the reason it became incapacitated. Anyone recall?

Goodyear Blimp " G-TLEL " crashed near Reichelsheim in Germany. The ship touched in fullspeed the ground, 3 passengers jumped out and the ship, the ship climbed up and fire destroyed the cabin with the pilot inside. A kerosine tube was broken after touching and fire ignites. The austrlian pilot had been killed!

My wife and her mother rode the 'blimp' at the Carson, CA site in the '60s -- Goodyear's blimp base in Carson, California opened in January 1968 and covers 27 acres. It has been home to nine Goodyear blimps (with just five different names) since opening. They have been Columbia, Eagle, Spirit of America, Spirit of Innovation and currently Wingfoot Three, the new model of semi-rigid airship that replaced the GZ20 blimps. Located on a wedge of land where the San Diego (I-405) and Harbor (I-110) Freeways intersect.

Our business was based near the IAH Goodyear blimp base. The blimp would sometimes do touch and gos at our airport David Wayne Hooks memorial airport near Tomball Texas. We had a radio tuned to the tower frequencies and would know when the Blimp was approaching. It was always a great sight to see it coming in for a touch and go…

This ia a very cool picture, Uwe! I like it a lot! And I got to see the Goodyear blimp once while I was in Germany. It was around 1985, or 1986, in the vicinity of Kaiserslautern. It was flying very low and slow, westbound, right along the A-6 autobahn. Anyway, it was pretty impressive. Oh, and I meant the ICAO Special Designator for an airship is: SHIP. That is the code FlightAware wants for the Aircraft Type. I realize that isn't the registration/identification code for this aircraft.

My husband and I took a ride while on our honeymoon,1964, while this G.Y. Blimp was stationed in Miami, FL., out on a causeway toward the beach. It was the most relaxing ride in an airship, very quiet and cruising along so slow, was really a neat sensation for visualization. Loved landing too.

I got to fly on the Blimp out of Pompano Beach. What a great experience! The Blimp was Turbine Powered with Shrouded Fans. I believe it was the only Turbine Powered Blimp. The Gondola was very sleek and beautiful. It must of been very expensive to operate because I dont think it was in operation for very long. If anyone knows what became of it please place a comment.

Just a clarification - a Zeppelin has a rigid structural aluminum framework inside the exterior fabric covering. Zeppelins typically used hydrogen for lift - until the Hindenburg! A Blimp such as this one does not have internal structure within the outer covering - it's shape is strictly the result of the interior helium-inflated bags.
