Excellent aircraft engineering.
When loitering, this aircraft would shut down and feather its outboard engine propellers.
Flew in the Navy version of this (P3-C Orion) several times during attendance at SPJC,
Clearwater Campus while studying Aeronautical Engineering, out of KPIE.
Previously flew on the Civilian version (Lockheed Electra) on Air Florida out of KPIE (St. Petersburg, FL) when I was 13 or so to Miami (KMIA), before AF was flying 737-200s.

I think that the letters "SPRAY" on the fuselage kind of answer your question.

Great photo. Whether it is a firefighter or a passenger plane, I still feel that the prop planes are just better looking than a lot of the jet jobs. I used to enjoy the Convair 580 that Frontier flew over the short range jets to Grand Junction in Colorado. Was also a crew dog on C130s in Nam.
