From airnation.net: The airport immediately responded and, as a security patrol officer attempted to apprehend the man, he ran in the direction of a British Airways aircraft already in its holding pattern ready for take-off. For safety reasons the security officer could not approach the aircraft. A search of the airfield was immediately conducted but the person was not found.

OK then, Why did the jet takeoff then? Wouldn't it be a HUGE security risk if the poor bugger had a bomb? So what if it would taxi to an isolated spot taking 1/2 an hour looking for him. better late than dead. Luckily it didn't happen. Hoping it will NEVER happen. FAA and other admins better wake up and not let another one slip by.

I was thinking the same thing. Guy could throw himself or something dangerous into the gear bay and all security can do is say, "Oh well, too dangerous. Our work stops here. "

However, the FAA does get involved worldwide if there is a downed US aircraft and US civilians lost. In this case, I should have corrected myself saying TSA. I have no idea who controls these 3rd world country airports.

What's the South African equivalent of the FAA? I don't know, and I'm sure most of us would have to look it up, so I would also make the same comparison of "FAA and other admins."

Apperantly his body made it to Heathrow. What I want to know is, how that body didn't move from turbulance, wind from the landing gear doors opening, and the landing itself.

A guy was found in the landing gear bay of a 330 somewhere in Africa earlier this year. He had been sitting there on several flights to Jo'burg and was hard as rock from the cold he had been exposed to. The landing gear bay of the A340/330 type airplanes are like a good size bedroom, but much less environmentally inviting. I saw the pictures of this guy, and my friend brought him out. Hypoxia will set in at some 10 minutes after take off, and later, with -56 deg C at FL 350, deep freeze will be accomplished before top of decent. Don't try this at home!! Huge mistake!

Yeah... Think scheduled to come out in Late Oct/Early Nov... A lot of changes, but I think they are going to survive.... My biggest fear is Corp moving to MSP. don't want to do that.

Yeah, I haven't seen him in awhile but I got a good friend that lives over here in Western AR that was flying out of that DAL base before they closed it. He was able to run up to KFSM, grab one of ya'lls and go right to work. After they closed it, he is having to fly out of MSP now and I think he is having to go to KXNA into ORD and up to get there. DAL is still playing with KFSM. They talked once about dropping it completley but now I think they are going direct ATL instead of via MEM, maybe one a day to MEM direct. Seems to be plenty from ATL back to MEM. Makes you wonder when ATL is going past the saturation point.lol

They are talking about mem not being a Delta Base any longer... They have already reduced flights to a very low level for a hub.. I am not sure what they are going to do. To go almost anywhere from MEM you almost have to go through another hub... it is crazy.

You mean they still got the DAL base open over there? Like I said, I haven't seen him in awhile. I thought they closed that base in May or June.

1 time in the last 2 years or so that we have heard about. Unfortunate but why saddle the responsibility of protecting people from themselves on the innocents; in this case, the Airlines.

The same thing happened last year, a flight from Charlotte-Boston, the kid fell out while the plane was on approach into boston.

That's what I was thinking. That was US Air wasn't it. I hadn't heard about any others until this here. This guy didn't fall out but unless he was dressed real warm, I imagine he was dead long before they landed.

Yes. It was US Air, it's tragic to hear about both instances, but it shows the weaknesses in all airport securities.

Sad part is, you have to wonder, WHAT WERE THEY THINKING OR NOT THINKING? If memory serves correct, the CLT-BOS was a teenager trying to get back home or similar. This guy must not have been thinking at all OR he could have just got caught short. Story says he scaled the fence and ran from security, which indicates they saw him, but he jumped into that 47 and it was already in takeoff position. They probably started rolling before he could get out. He just may have not got out in time. I guess security could have stopped the 47 but that would have been a deal too. Big question is, what did he have intention to do once he scaled the fence and got inside?

Just saw the video from your link. Its pretty a forgone conclusion he fell out. Its not US Airs fault, not the airports fault. It's just a dumb kid not using his head. (maybe a prank?). Sorry for your loss parents, but your kid was in the wrong. Case Closed.

As a matter of fact the kid in the US Air incident went to a school in the same district as me and for a few days there were special events for him.

Although relatively rare, maybe there should be strong signage in the wheel wells indicating the likelihood of death if you attempt to stowaway?

anyone knows that there isnt much space in there and also the air presure is probaly the thing that killed him, he probaly didnt realise that it was in its holding pattern for takeoff and thought he would get away from the guy chasing him but was wrong

Your anyone knows should be "ANYONE SHOLD KNOW", but as you said, he was more interested in getting away from security and lost situational awareness. Either way, still very dead. As someone else said here, I wonder what happened to keep him in the wheel well on landing?

Again? We need to educate people about high altitude environments. Seems most outside of aviation don't even realize how thin and frigid the atmosphere becomes at altitude.

I really believe the pilot were very upset with this horrible death of a person and the airport should have been closed and the pilot given two days off. We are so focused on getting there oh well if somthing gets in our way. We must go on.Sound criminal.

I'm from SA..The AP security is very slack..Security companies generally employ people without thorough background checks...It's scary. Half the time most the security personnel can't be bothered. OK, someone 'gave chase' but it shouldn't have ended there. As people have suggested it should've been followed up.He could've been loaded with explosives!

Based on the story, the pilot probably knew nothing about it on takeoff, and he was probably out of the London Hub and at home when he found out about it, if he ever did.
