The rest of the story:

"ORLANDO, Fla. —

A runway was shut down at Orlando International Airport Wednesday.

A Southwest Airlines plane was being moved from a gate to the maintenance hangar by two workers when the plane went off the runway and got stuck, officials said.

Airport officials said they shut down runway 18R as a precaution."

Well now they get to do more maintenance. I used to do touch-and-go's at that airport before it became BIG!

Heading is misleading. Doubt the plane "skids off taxiway" while being towed. They undoubtedly missed the turn off and put the thing in the mud. Time for recurrent towing training.
Highflyer1950
I don't see any tow tug in the picture, but if it was a damp day in Orlando, they might have been taxiing a bit to fast and as most pilots will attest to: the nose steering doesn't respond well especially if on the painted line.

Gotta shake your head at big companies that only state something like "safety is our top priority " in cases like this just to make a stab at convincing the public that everything was going according to SOP. It would be better to just not comment until you have the truth about what happened.
sgbelverta
Well, if the engines "ingested mud" it's probably a pretty big maintenance job now. Wonder if those guys are still employed?

Heard it, saw it last night while working at Kmco. 737NG is light on the nose when low fuel taxy. Tower told them to expedite. The nose had little friction to make the slight right turn after crossing the runway. It continue straight even when tiller was to the right. Went off to the left of taxyway. I have pics. I do not work for Southwest.

Was it being towed or taxied? The early reports I saw from the totally unreliable Fl news stations was that it was under tow.
preacher1
Kinda hard to tell, but don't see a tug anywhere in the pic. Post up above by Ricardo talks like it was being taxied and tower said to expedite runway crossing.

It was taxied under it's own power.

I have to ask, why would you not be on the right brake to help a "nose lite" aircraft make its turn. Oops! I forget, few today have tail-dragger time. Plus,I don't recall any A&P's or AI's actually running jet engines to move aircraft to a maintenance hanger, I thought they were towed???
MultiComm
Yeah there are several companies that allow mechanics to taxi aircraft. Usually it is the same ones that due the high speed runs or high power engine engine checks. They have to be properly trained and well as fast as some of the SW pilots taxi around it would not surprise me that the mechanics were not properly trained or were in too big a hurry. I agree though it is better to tow them when there is a tug available.

Continental taxied them to the hangar for maintenance at EWR. The only time they went to the hanger was if they were wet and needed to be dried...
preacher1
Well, I would agree on the tail dragger time, but qualified AP's can taxi. Don't you remember Joe Petroni?

The NTSB! What the hell is the NTSB there for?

I'll answer my own question. I believe its just normal shoddy news reporting. They think the NTSB has to comment anytime a plane gets its picture in the news.

I'll answer your question...this was a Part 121 Carrier that had an accident with a Commercial Airliner. Obviously, the FAA standards for movement of aircraft on an airport weren't met. Thousands of mechanics move aircraft around airports daily all over the world, yet 2 of there "best" seemed to have done some major damage not only to an aircraft, but probably to airport property, impinged on airport operations by leaving said damaged aircraft in the mud. Filter in the cost of the whole "bugger up" and the NTSB who overseas the safety of Aviation in this country (after all, it is the National Transportation SAFETY Board) who needs to see that it doesn't happen again.Good thing these 2 yo yo's didn't run into another aircraft causing loss of life or worse yet into the terminal causing even more isssues. Maybe you can explain why this is shoddy reporting?

Disclaimer: I am not associated with the news industry, just a Commercial Airline trying to educate one who asked a question and obviously doesn't understand the NTSBs function in aircraft incidents and accidents. :-)

No intention of flight here Mike. National transportation was not taking place. The same airport damage can be done with a poorly driven snow plow. The FAA may get involved, but its tough to ground a mechanic.
sparkie624
Depending on what the FAA finds, they can take his license permanently or temporarily just like a pilot or give them a LOI (Letter of Investigation)... Being a mechanic I have taxied 737's MANY times and sometimes on ice where you cannot turn with the nose wheel (many of you may have as well). Not a good feeling when you are skidding...
bbabis
bbabis 1
I guess its only right. If a pilot screws up on the few actions that he/she are allowed to do as a "mechanic," the FAA can take their license. So if a mechanic screws up one of the few things they are allowed to do as a "pilot," their license can go also. In hindsight I'm sure they wished they had tugged it.
sparkie624
Depending on where they were at, that may not have been an option... Some airports do not allow tow functions on certain areas, for example one that crosses busy runways... And Mechanics have certain rules just as pilots do.. Things we can and cannot do and there is a reason...

Both you boys carry an ATP so I am going to keep my dog out of that fight. LOL

No fight for you to worry about here preacher. Mike are good guys just like most on here. We all live and learn. In this business If we don't learn, we don't live.

I guess he was in a hurry to keep is schedule up to date.. No surprise here.

There's "Southwest Taxi Speed" and then there's everyone elses..I remember from my Navy and Pt121 days...on the ramp..no faster than a man can walk, on the taxiway no faster than a horse can run (normally).. In this case it was mechanics doing it.. taxi qualified by Flt Ops perhaps?

At my airline a training Captain would train and qualify a minimum number of mechs to taxi between the terminal and hangar at JFK. With the numerous taxiways, many other aircraft taxing and fast talking ground controllers it definitely was a "checkout" procedure. Very very rarely, crews would pick up the jet at the hangar to begin a trip.
Doobs
What else is new.

In my 14 years with a major airline, I experienced this three times! Once, sliding off the runway on landing in Boston in a B727 and twice while taxiing in Jacksonville in a L 1011!!! Exciting times!

Sounds like Eastern
WendyKruppDespain
Nope. The Delta as they call it in the south. I was in so many emergencies during my career that I was known as a jinx! Pilots would gasp when they discovered I was working their flight ! Loved every minute of my job and am ever so grateful for the experiences and all that I learned. I have great respect for pilots ' abilities.
WendyKruppDespain
I wasn't flying the planes, but working the flights as the senior flight attendant.

Blame it on the guys. LOL

Accident: Southwest B737 at Orlando on Aug 11th 2015, went off taxiway and nose gear collapsed

The Southwest 737 had veered left off the taxiway and came to a stop with the nose gear collapsed, main wheels on soft ground and both engines having digged into soft ground and ingested mud. Tower closed runway 18R and also briefly closed runway 18L requesting runway 18L intersection taxiway J to be swept, then runway 18L returned into operation.
