On a carrier would that eliminate the need for a cat launch?

That is the idea, also makes smaller airfields near a combat zone feasible as you won't need to build a 7000 ft runway.

That is incorrect. The carrier version has a launch bar attached. There is no aircraft in the Naval inventory that is carrier based and only takes off via VTOL. That is what the amphibs are for.

The F-35 has been fitted with a catch and launch bar for this specific reason. They will be launched via the cat.

I never said it would only be used as a VTOL, it does provide the option to be used in VTOL operations as necessary.

Yes. The Marines will use the VTOL on amphibs. Since this is aimed at replacing the F-18 in the next decade, there will be the VTOL and carrier config. I was really hoping the F-22 would win out.

But I'm more concerned with the V-22 replacing the C-2. Guess I'll need to find that old thread and join the party.
