Virgin Galactic Launches Tourism Spaceship From Mojave Desert

제출됨

MOJAVE, Calif. (AP) — Virgin Galactic’s tourism spaceship climbed more than 50 miles high above California’s Mojave Desert on Thursday, reaching for the first time what the company considers the boundary of space. Founder Richard Branson greeted the pilots after the test, declaring “Space is Virgin territory!” The mated jet, WhiteKnightTwo, and rocket ship, SpaceShipTwo, lifted off from Mojave Air and Space Port shortly after 7 a.m. Thursday. The jet climbed to an altitude near 43,000 feet, and… (losangeles.cbslocal.com) 기타...

Thank you, it looks like CBS changed the URL for some reason and didn't bother redirecting to the new location.

mr branson has invested in and been both successful and not in many "schemes",adventures and ideas..i wish him well in this one as he has been working on it and investing in it for a lot of years now..the cost of wanting to be a "passenger" when this idea is totally approved will be beyond the financial limits of almost everyone however..

Just curious, how many runways could handle the landing? It needs the launch jet to move to a refueling airport?
RonRosano
It's not so much runway length - SS2 came to a stop about halfway down 12,500'-long runway 30 at Mojave - it's more about protected airspace, like they have in Mojave (next to Edwards AFB) and as they have for commercial ops at Spaceport America in New Mexico (next to White Sands Missile Range).

Did pretty well with the facts there - though burn duration of the rocket was 60 seconds, and it wasn't Virgin "America"

Sir Branson will succeed because he's not encumbered by US govt or the pc police.

How's your NO2 tank? Remember not to let it frost up.

By a wide percentage, rocket launches are surprisingly successful.

Maybe we could add manslaughter charges for all of these gross failures. Read Dr. Richard Feynman' did not agree with the Challenger disaster findings and wrote his own dissenting opinion on the incompetence of the Challenger disaster. Columbia would break-up in reentry several years later. Unfortunately Dr. Feynman passed away. With that, we lose his incredible insight.

Come on people, this program has already killed a test pilot and some bad landings
You only see the successes and not the blunders. I think this project is pushing too hard. I think a review of the rocket is overdue. I hope this works, but as I saying manned space flight for an expensive joyride is very dangerous All you are getting is a ride into the upper atmosphere. I really hope it works. Most people barf with their first zero g. It still happens with astronauts or cosmonauts. That's a mess I would really hate to clean.

There is no industry on Earth that got to where it is today without subjecting at least some of the people involved to high degrees of risk.

Are these wealthy joyriders are going to receive a serious
briefing from real astronauts about the hazards of low atmospheric space flight. What are the safety protocols? Up until now it's been wheeeeee I'm going on a rocket ride....good luck with that squid!

If our Founding Fathers had that attitude, we'd all still commute via horse and buggy, and be reading of these fantasies by candlelight.

Edward don't we spend a large part of our lives trying to avoid if not minimize risk to acceptable levels. We will never eliminate risk in all its totality.

My point exactly.
