Geraldyn “Jerrie” M. Cobb, a noted aviation pioneer and fierce advocate for women flying into space, died Thursday at her home in Florida, her family has said. She was 88. Sad for her passing, but I wouldn't exactly call her a "pioneer." That would be Katherine Stinson, Pancho Barnes, and Jacqueline Cochran. They were all 15-30 years ahead of her in aviation, with Stinson - IIRC - the 4th woman ever to be issued a license, the first woman every to perform a loop.

Still sad to hear of anyone in aviation going West.

I would as she was indeed as defined in Dictionary.com “What does it mean to be a pioneer?:. one who is first or among the earliest in any field of inquiry, enterprise, or progress:

Her endeavors with the space program would meet that definition, in my mind.

exactly.. "joe" obviously doesn't exactly know what the real meaning of a "pioneer" is..
