With airlines imposing mandatory mask requirements on flights amid the coronavirus pandemic, many unhappy passengers have made headlines for being removed from flights for refusing to wear a mask. And with some carriers keeping no-fly lists of passengers who violated the policy, it is now clear that more than 900 passengers have been banned from airlines because of their refusal to put on a mask. Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said in a Thursday memo to employees that 460 people are now banned… (www.msn.com) 기타...
The issue goes beyond masks or not. If the airline says "that's our rule" then the passenger is obligated to follow the rule or not fly, even if the passenger thinks the rule is stupid. Airlines are generally interested in acting in what they think is the best interest of both their companies and their customers and following the law/regulations in all its forms, because it serves them to do so. I, as a passenger, am not interested in flying with a passenger who intentionally flouts any rule, no matter how stupid they might think the rule is. If an airline has a potential passenger who has stated or acted in a way that ignores a rule, the they have every right, and even duty, to refuse them carriage. One might think that it's "my right" to carry a loaded firearm on board, but most people don't think so, and those who do simply are prevented from flying, as they should be.
well said. It is not a persons "constitutional right" or "god's given right" to do what they want in a private business, in that place of business, or in any public place that affects other people. Either follow their rules, or don't enter, don't fly.
Put simply, there are a LOT of people in this country who don't like government mandates of any kind. That is the root of all of the resistance and flouting of the rules.
So what? I don't like stopping at red lights or (often) staying below a speed limit, both of which are government mandated, but I do like the rules for pure milk, which is also a set of government mandates. This whole mask thing is a tempest in teapot and an excuse for bratty behavior by a few people. Follow the rules, or go to the ballot box and vote in people who will put in place the rules you want.
I have a name for people that think like you do..sheeple... so dependant on the government to do your thinking for you and run your life. Yes.. follow the rules.. whatever that oh so good government and media tells you to do.. how pathetic
Hey guys, I'm not saying I agree with it, I'm just pointing out why this is happening. I've actually encountered a dude who insists that a mask mandate is unconstitutional if it's not done so by the legislature rather than unilaterally by the governor. And he's not alone. The courts have consistently ruled in favor of governors or cities with such mandates but it doesn't matter to people like that. I agree it's frustrating. I personally hate wearing them, but I'm also not selfish and am in the high-risk group, as are several family members. I'm not gonna pay chicken with my health.
Several weeks ago, I posted a comment about this issue. Both my wife and I contracted CV19 in Rome back in December 2019. We had no idea what we had other than a "bug" that dropped us like a bad prom date in the backseat of a Ford Pinto. We finally tested positive in June for the antibodies. We are both in our 60's, and we have no problem wearing masks. If airline protocol is to wear a mask, either wear it or go Greyhound (where you'll have to wear one as well), drive your car (no mask required), or simply just stay home. Problem solved. You're Welcome! :)
I’ll do the math for you. Japan population is 126 million, U.S.A. 328 million. Japanese people wear the mask. U.S.A. many don’t. Japan C-19 deaths, 1,700. U.S.A. deaths 235,000.
Number of excess deaths reported by the CDC so far this year in the US almost 300,000. COVID deaths reported as 230,000+ so the extra 70,000 deaths are due to something. What’s your guess, just bad luck for those people? Most likely the true number of COVID related deaths is actually much higher, not “far lower.” I can’t find find anything from the CDC that reports 50k non COVID related heart attack deaths included in the COVID numbers.
South Korea with a population of 50 million has had 464 C-19 deaths. Of course, it would be beyond imagining that their Prime Minister would publicly humiliate citizens for wearing a protective mask.
Published by the CDC, Anthony and James, before the science was politicized, note COVID-19 and various influenza strains are similar in size:
"In our systematic review, we identified 10 RCTs that reported estimates of the effectiveness of face masks in reducing laboratory-confirmed influenza virus infections in the community from literature published during 1946–July 27, 2018. In pooled analysis, we found no significant reduction in influenza transmission with the use of face masks"
"None of the household studies reported a significant reduction in secondary laboratory-confirmed influenza virus infections in the face mask group"
"Our systematic review found no significant effect of face masks on transmission of laboratory-confirmed influenza."
Have you heard about the development in Kansas, where many rural counties do not have a mandated mask policy, whereas several urban counties do require people to wear masks when physical distancing is difficult to achieve? You know of course that in urban settings the danger of infections is far higher, but the numbers clearly show that masks do slow the spread down significantly.
Hâve you heard that a sufficient number of anecdotal evidence coming from many different countries is a strong indication that the anecdotal evidence is indeed quite certain to be true?
Have you heard giving people a false sense of security -- in this case mask wearing -- leads to increased risk when they avoid behaviors that actually work, i.e., hand washing and distance?
But you feel free to believe are protected by a cloth mask with a 97% virus penetration rate -- https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/5/4/e006577.long
Considering the number of people involved with what you call anecdotal evidence, tens of thousands in the well researched case of Jena in Germany, hundreds of thousands in the case of Kansas and hundreds of millions in Asia, all your arguments sound really week, sorry.
Wolfgang, feel free to be a masking wearing science denier, but both the science and the politics are clear – masks do not reduce infections, though they do create the impression of politicians protecting the masses, while making the masses (sheeple) feel better.
Wear your mask and feel better, I’ll stick with actual science.
Sorry David, you have no idea what you are talking about, as you are blissfully unaware of the existence of a science called Epidemiology. Your schools haven’t done a good job it seems. And you call me a science denier, poor man! No wonder your country has done such a bad job in controlling the pandemic.
Yes, Wolfgang, there is a science called epidemiology. I note your complete lack of challenge to the actual science I have referenced. Instead, you resorted to ad hominem attack – great way to add to the discourse.
You completely missed the mark regarding my epidemiological experience and background.
Try to focus on some actual science in the future.
this article is for all studies pre covid-19. even tho it was published in May 2020, there is very little in it for covid-19. it will take months, even year to completely analyse this virus.
Just so I am clear, Larry, you do not believe the CDC-published science that shows face masks do not protect against COVID-19-sized viruses? This paper includes data from RCTs conducted between 1946 and 2018 -- prior to the politicization of COVID-19-related science, but it cannot be trusted? Further, you believe "it will take months, even year (sic) to completely analyse (sic) this virus" but we should wear masks anyway? Just in case it helps?
Exactly right John. If you have Covid or are asymptomatic and don't cover your nose too you are putting others at risk. If Others near you have Covid you are putting yourself at risk.
If you get Covid you will have one of three outcomes: 1. You will die a horrible death. 2. You will recover but be left with life-long life altering health problems. 3. If you're lucky your symptoms will be mild.(Trump seems to think the first two options are fake news, don't know why.) Trouble is, you don't get to choose. And if you give Covid to someone else, they don't get to choose either.
SO IF YOU BREATHE THROUGH YOUR DAMN NOSE THEN COVER YOUR DAMN NOSE.
CDC guidance? The CDC has said on numerous occasions that these masks are not effective. If this keeps up the airlines will lose more customers because people are fed up
"Face masks help prevent people who have COVID-19, including those who are pre-symptomatic or asymptomatic, from spreading the virus to others. Masks are most likely to reduce the spread of COVID-19 when they are widely used by people in public settings. Wide use of masks especially helps protect those at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19 as well as workers who frequently come into close contact with other people (e.g., in airports, seaports or other docks, bus terminals, and train stations). Using masks along with other preventive measures, including social distancing, frequent hand hygiene, and cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces, is one of the most effective strategies available for reducing COVID-19 transmission."
"CDC strongly recommends appropriate masks be worn by all passengers and by all personnel operating the conveyance while on public conveyances (e.g., airplanes, ships, ferries, trains, subways, buses, taxis, ride-shares) and within locations where people board such conveyances (e.g. airports, bus or ferry terminals, train stations, seaports)."
Clearly the masks don't work do they? Why is there so many cases if the masks are working so well ? You are breathing in your germs and bacteria instead of expelling it like your body was designed to do. And never mind the lack of much needed oxygen that your body survives on.... not your CO2... keep wearing your masks, all you kool-aid drinkers
there are so many cases because so many people are not wearing masks. One is getting plenty of oxygen while breathing with a mask on! And you are not breathing in your CO2. the mask is not a balloon that holds all your exhale that u take back in.
Because of the idiots who refuse to wear masks. There's unfortunately enough that the spread keeps happening.
The CDC said as far back as July that if everyone wore a mask, COVID would soon be under control... But people still refuse to listen.
It's also been shown many times that there is no drop in O2 levels in the body when wearing a mask. Many healthcare works wear an N95 with a disposable surgical mask over it so they can re-use the N95. Even with that, when testing their O2 levels there was little to no drop.
You're not breathing in your CO2 and bacteria when wearing a mask – the mask still lets air through, it simply reduces the amount of droplets that fly into the air when you speak or exhale.
I don't drink Kool-aid, but I consume scientific facts.

The crooked media sure got into your head. If you did any research at all you would know that the covid virus is so miniscule that no masks will stop the virus from penetrating the fabric.. that filthy germ infested fabric full of germs and bacteria . Someone please explain to me how that is healthy. Flu had a higher mortality rate but the airlines don't make you wear a mark if you have flu symptoms. Please explain that as well
If you read any mask packaging, many of them state that a mask does not prevent you from getting COVID-19. The CDC has also said this. What they do is prevent you from spreading large virus-carrying droplets unabated to other people, especially in tight spaces and large gatherings, which is the whole point of wearing one. As for your point about "germ infected fabric," it's also recommended that you do not reuse disposable masks and that you should frequently hand-wash reusable masks precisely for that reason. No mask is meant to be worn 24x7.
Your other point in a previous post about breathing is also incorrect. If, as you state, that a mask won't prevent a virus from penetrating it, then it certainly won't stop any air from going in or out. The coronavirus is roughly 125 nanometers in size. An oxygen molecule is 2.96 angstroms (an angstrom is one ten-billionth of a meter). So nobody would have any problem breathing normally with a mask on. If it were a problem, no one would even bother. Not surgeons, nurses, construction workers - no one.
Just to clarify - obviously if you have a condition that prevents you from wearing a mask, then you should not be forced to wear one. And the oxygen molecule size is just one of several measurements, but all are way smaller than the coronavirus. See https://www.getnitrogen.org/pdf/graham.pdf for more info.
the 70% of covid cases had worn masks. was that 100% of the time, or just sometimes. those covid cases could have come when they were not wearing them. so it means nothing
This past week, on my flight from MIA, a person in First would not wear their mask properly....They were asked to leave. As we taxied two others in the rear of the plane decided mask time was over. We turned to the penalty box and sat for twenty minutes. Then it was return to the gate, where airport police and a couple of larger gentlemen helped escort the two other passengers off the aircraft. As the female passenger was leaving her statements were overflowing with profanities and made the final statement of, "I hope this f----ing plane crashes!" Her sidekick was screaming, "THIS IS RACISM!!" Now, while I m no fan of wearing a mask, although I fall into two of the "high risk" categories, I will wear my mask to stay within regulations of the airlines I fly with.
Back in the day, every business posted a sign that said "We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone". I think every business has this right, period. Now, the courts have included some "but"s.
There's some resistance to masking over here in Germany, but not nearly at the scale seen in the US. Too much liberty and too much control are both capable of infantilizing people. What's missing over here is the sheer scale of loathing of difference seen in the US. There's conformity on the extreme right and conformity on the extreme left. Justice isn't a part of the equation as much as is simply having it one's own way. Burger King society.
Have you been on a flight where everyone was wearing a mask but some entitled jerks wouldn’t cover their noses? and were also the first ones to stand up and get close to others when the flight arrived at the gate?
I have. I also have an 82-year old mother who lives in our garage apartment whom I fear will catch this. I self-quarantined for two weeks after those flights
