Cool: New “Control Tower Mode” On United Airlines

Submitted
United Airlines has added a nifty new “Control Tower” mode to its inboard IFE screens, allowing passengers to track the planes around them in real-time. JonNYC shares about a new component of United’s inflight-entertainment system that allows passengers to track the aircraft around them while on the ground, including where they are headed: Have you ever wondered where the airplane parked next to yours is heading? How about when you’re taxiing, and you see a plane take off? Well, you’re in luck,… (liveandletsfly.com) More...

Years ago United had "channel 9" on the inflight entertainment headset-you could listen to the cockpit. I loved it. It was very relaxing and you knew a few seconds ahead of time when the plane was going to change course or altitude. Miss that.

About 7 months ago I was flying from KEWR to KSFO and asked the pilot if we could have channel 9. He was happy I asked him and said absolutely. Unfortunately it was not functioning bur when we reached San Francisco he personally apologized for its non operation, Such a lovely gentleman.

That was common on a lot of airlines then:
American Airlines Flight 191 occurred. That was abandoned.

This is not the same thing. AAL 191 had in-flight live video, so they actually watched their catastrophy. These systems are nothing more than FlightAware / FlightRadar / ADS-B Exchange / RadarBox type in-seat entertainment. Short of an incursion or mid-air watching the system is not going to "show" you the flight.

Channel 9 is still there on some planes. It's called "From the Flight Deck," and it's buried in the entertainment options of the app or the seatback display. But I haven't heard it in years. When I can find it, the channel is usually just a hiss. When I have asked a flight attendant if it can be turned on, they either never heard of the channel or say "It's up to the pilot." In channel 9 days, more pilots left it on than turned it off; but I think these days even the pilots may not know the option is there. Still, many of us would love to have it back. It's a unique feature for United, and now that they've added the Control Tower Mode, they might be willing to make it more available.

By the way, if you can get on the Internet (currently free for T-Mobile customers on United), a good way to track your flight (and any others) is with FlightRadar24.

I used to listen that that channel all of the time (it's been many years). I particularly used to love hearing all of the approach chatter as I neared my destination...

Thank you! next time I fly United I will look for it. I love to track the flights on Flight Radar, but I particularly enjoy hearing the specific conversation of my plane. I guess I'd have to hop through the centers on Live ATC as we traveled.

I have to agree, I loved Channel 9. I'll have to check out these suggestions next time I'm om board.

Ignoring all the political diatribes which this squawk seems to have caused the "Control Tower Mode" does appear to add another little interest to on board information and who can find fault with that. If it is as good as suggested then I suspect similar systems will soon appear on many airlines.

I love the seat back display where I can watch the plane I am on and where it is, with altitude and temperature etc.I spend more time watching that, than I do movies or t v shows. It would be wonderful if we could have it like flightradar showing every other flight around us as well.

Indeed! Fun for all of us map geeks. I suppose we could watch flight aware and monitor our plane that way

Swissair had it on our flight to Italy. Nice feature:)

That sounds pretty cool. I really enjoyed Delta's attitude indicator display on their IFE on my BOS-AMS flight. United's effort here should be interesting.

I don't recall which airline it was here in Asia, but at least one of them also has "cockpit mode" which mirrors some of the data on a couple of displays... very nice!

Control Tower mode sounds like fun too... anything that gives folk something to do (other than watching some of the godawful movies currently making the rounds) has got to be a positive!

How do we report to admins and get all the political crap removed and those members banned?

This is NOT a political forum!

This site fails dramatically at monitoring conversations. It's not just a matter of differences of opinion. They allow libelous and foul comments from the same commenters. Even when comments are downvoted you can still see them and people are never thrown off the site no matter what they say.

Looks like somebody heard you. I see below that some posters, or maybe only one poster -- I don't know -- have/has been suspended. I'm all for utilizing the tools made mention earlier to combat the hijacking (I know probably not the best term to use in this venue, but I'm an engineer so I need some slack) of comments/discussions herein to something totally off topic, and frankly, in my opinion, akin to what I would say to be nothing more than grade school playground bantering back and forth. A la Forrest Gump, that's all I'm going to say.

Last time I flew on a United flight, which was about 10 years ago, they had an audio channel monitoring the ATC communications on the active radio channel in the cockpit.

I used to listen to Channel 9 on UA whenever it was available. Much better than whatever else was on the IFE. However, It's been many, many years since I have found this feature working on an airplane. I think that in today's environment it is highly unlikely this will ever come back.

One thing about the publicly available data from Flightaware or any flight tracking system is that the data is delayed by about 5 minutes. I wonder how popular this feature is going to be if there is an obvious delay. It does say that control tower mode only works when the plane is on the ground though.

I also wonder why the cockpit view on the FlightPath 3d is disabled below 10k'?
southgeek

Possibly because Wifi is disabled at that altitude, personal electronics (large) have to be stowed, and "sterile cockpit" below 10k... some combination of those factors so that the pilots are not distracted by turning things on/off when they need to focus on landing protocols? Just a guess.

FlightPath 3d is the map feature in the aircraft IFE (in the seat backs). All the modes work below 10k' feet except the cockpit view. The cockpit view is not really a cockpit view, it is just a simulation using the map (like Google Earth flight mode) and the aircraft flight data (which is available all the time).

Great, now bring Channel 9 back.

I vote for the down votes on the political BS

On topic, Channel 9 is long gone, a captain told me is was a liability issue, there were multiple lawsuits.

I there a CHAPTA that checks for morons?

This is great. Like it.

My down votes got two of the remaining three to -9; need just one more. Thanks for the tip!

Yep - got it mate - thanks for the advice, as you said it echoes what Colin said.

Anyway - yes I am horrified by what I see on social media about what pax are getting up to. I am based in Asia and never see anything like it in this region - not that I am aware of anyway - probably due to the Asian desire to avoid being embarrassed (loss of face).

Have you ever wanted to know which aircraft just clipped our wingtip off? now you can see their call sign right from the headrest in front of you!
