As an alternative to having "plunged 20,000 feet", the crew could have started a leisurely descent to 10k. Thus alleviating the terrified of their burden by rendering them all unconscious.

A little communication would have gone a long way since most of the pax have no idea about getting to a lower altitude hastily. The story though is only terrifying to those on board.

Maybe if the pax paid more attention to the pre flight briefing regarding cabin pressure change and what they should do in the event of :
