There was an article on CBC News about Order of Canada recipients, including Judy Cameron. There was a good quote from her:

She laughed, recalling times during her career that male colleagues would say they were open-minded to a woman pilot, but tell her their friends may not be as progressive.

"They'd say, I've never flown with a woman before," she said. "I'd look at them and say 'Neither have I.'"

There may have been a time when this would gave been necessary but I hope it has been at least a generation in which girls have assumed they are on an equal footing with men when it comes to opportunity.
It strikes me as being somewhat insulting to women (much like all identity-based affirmative action) by affirming the need their gender has for help to attain parity with men.

Affirmative action is a known contributor to lowered standards and safety should never be sacrificed on the alter of pitiful

I have not found a way to edit or cancel an accidentally posted squawk.

Here is another go.😏

I have flown on Air Canada for many decades and have been happy and interested upon learning my flight was being captained by a woman. I assume the standards for attaining this responsibility are the same regardless of identity but I am wary of this assumption now that women have achieved and often surpassed men in many career pursuits, the law and medicine being two high profile examples.

Cheers to a future world where no favouring one over the other based on anything but merit is the norm.

I can say with certainty that for most of Judy’s career, the playing field has been anything but level. It’s only in the last decade or so that the dinosaurs who believed they only belonged in a kitchen have retired.

People retiring now were born in the 50s. Beatles, Stones, counter culture, etc.

I would need to hear how someone hired in the 70s faced an uphill battle.
I'm willing to bet there were plenty of good men who were happy to make a place for Captain Cameron.

I know male-bashing is all the rage but that false narrative doesn't "fly" here. 🙂

I’ve seen and heard plenty of misogyny among male pilots and in fact it still exists today (heard it as little as two weeks ago when a pilot was ranting about a female colleague who was going on maternity leave. Judy has too much class to tell her stories of the “check pilots” who tried to prove she was unworthy. All they succeeded in doing was to steel her resolve not to give in, but not all had that much fortitude.

Oh, and just because you haven’t experienced it doesn’t make it untrue.

This honour could not go to a more deserving person!

Congrats Judy, you are an inspiration to all, but especially to young women who look at you as the touchstone for what they too can strive for!
