Sounds like he lawyered up to buy some time, hoping the cops did something out of line to dismiss or reduce the charges. Just a guess.

I'm sure he was, but posted bail until trial date.
Here in NC, he would already be on the 4th floor of the county jail awaiting trial with some crazy bond like $500K. DUI alone here is treated very seriously. I can't imagine someone charged with with DUI + Vehicular Homicide ever walking outside of a prison for the next 10-15 years. At least not here.
My bad. Just read the local article. $400K bond and up to 18 years.
