Families awarded $17.8 million in military jet crash
FA-18 accident in 2008 (usnews.msnbc.msn.com) 기타...Sort type: [Top] [Newest]
wish there could be another way to compensate families for their losses..............
Here is the account I read in my morning newspaper.
"The Marine Corps has said the plane suffered a mechanical failure but a series of bad decisions led the pilot — a student — to bypass a potentially safe landing at a coastal Navy base after his engine failed on Dec. 8, 2008. The pilot ejected and told investigators he screamed in horror as he watched the jet plow into the neighborhood, incinerating two homes.
The case was unique in that the government admitted liability..."
Another case of a student making a fatal decision by not taking his first available emergency landing site. That should eliminate his career as a naval aviator.

The report I read said it was a combinations of events that lead to this accident. 1. Design flaw 2. Maintence problems 3. The pilot was ordered to divert from North Island to Miramar.4. Minor pilot error. I don't think I would call a carrier quaified F 17 pilot a student.
Carl - Here is the version I read - http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/nation/govt-to-pay-family-17-8m-for-military-2063024.html
Student? Carrier Qualified Gene Nowak.....
Toby - Read it again. It is in quotes and taken directly from my newspaper. You want to read it for yourself, here is the link - http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/nation/govt-to-pay-family-17-8m-for-military-2063024.html
And no, not carrier qualified, USAF qualified.

apologies Gene
Not USAF qualified; USAF does not fly Hornets, the USMC and USN do. The decision to divert from NAS North Island (to which the CATCC was trying to divert him) to MCAS Miramar was made by his superiors, not by him or by any ATC.
Your report doesn't state that the aircraft had been referred for maintenance due to a faulty starboard engine but was allowed to fly 146 more times before this incident. Four of the squadron's senior officers were relieved as a result of the investigation. I'll try to find the story I read earlier today with the info I just cited.
