TSA drops plan to allow small knives

It's good to know the government still can't make a decision. (www.foxnews.com) 기타...

My understanding of this is that it was the airlines and flight crews who objected to this plan which caused it to be dropped. (I'm sure I'll be corrected if that's wrong) Well, if that's the case they're free to set up their own screening systems. I can't think of any other business where the federal government screens your customers for you to ensure the safety of the employees. My local liquor store sure doesn't have federal officers at the doors, patting down each person who comes in. And while I'm sure my local movie theater and sports arena would LOVE to have feds preventing anyone from sneaking in their own drinks, instead of paying the 400% markup they charge, it's not happening. So why do the airlines get to use my tax dollars for this?

A return of purloined civil rights? Not happening this time around. Maybe later. Maybe not.

I guess the numbskulls who decided to let this happen in the first place should be fired. This should have never been even thought of in the frist place.

You can still buy a Swiss Army knife inside the terminal of Geneva's International Airport and then carry it on board a US plane to the USA!

I think you guys find it too easy to dump on "the government." The actual government is a complicated system which dictates policy based upon the wishes of many disparate groups. Being a democracy, this involves weighing what each has to say and making a decision. Often, when a decision is made (like allowing small knives onto airplanes), people who disagree with it freak out (see: the last several years in Congress). As a result, sometimes a decision is modified or rescinded.

So when you're whining on a semi-anonymous internet message board about how the government doesn't do everything you want it to, keep in mind that you can always move to Russia. Or China. Or any other country that doesn't really care what people have to say.

Remember: You really aren't so special. But at least here in the good ol' US of A you can pretend to be. Depending on whether or not you actually understand how a representative democracy responsible to four hundred million people actually works, of course. Hint: It doesn't just do what you want.

Fox News is for morons, by the way.

What I take exception to is the reactionary way things like this unfold. We have people coming up with regulations and imposing laws who don't necessarily understand what needs to be regulated or controlled, but want good headlines. Yes, government is big and complex; perhaps it shouldn't be. Elected officials are too focused on getting re-elected, and bureaucrats are too focused on protecting their sphere of influence. The result is inconsistent governing, waste and deteriorating respect for one another.

Yes, we live in a democracy that allows us to make comments like these without fear of reprisal - or, wait a minute - do we? The recent news about the IRS targeting Conservative groups: TSA (and others) collecting data on average citizen's phone calls & etc.: what's wrong with this picture?

Anyway, the TSA is, and has been, not answerable to anyone but themselves. Their history of poor decisions, foolishly bureaucratic ukases, and arrogance pretty much speaks for itself. Does anyone actually remember the last time they caught a terrorist about to board a plane? Oh, wait - they never have! Apparently they have been too busy doing pat-downs and cavity searches on 4-year old children and elderly invalids.

I thought there might have been a lick of sense somewhere in government for just a second, but as it turns out, nope, nada! Take even the nail cleaners and trimmers from the honest masses that would need to help in an attempted hijacking while the truly evil will always get whatever they want onboard. Those willing to fly by these rules will have a higher chance of dying by these rules. I'm thankful that I don't need the airlines. I'll fly myself until government screws that up or I'll drive.

When will they drop beverages. I still can't understand how they make you drop a 20 oz pepsi bottle but can pick one up as soon as you get through. Doesn't make sense.

They don't allow outside drinks because you could have filled it with an explosive liquid. You can't do that with a drink you buy inside the safe zone.
kthurley
K H 1
The whole liquid explosive thing is completely unfeasible on an aircraft. The banning of liquids is utterly idiotic.
zennermd
zennermd 2
I can clearly tell you know nothing about explosives. There are liquid explosive out there that can more than do the job using only one of the little shampoo bottles. Remember, the more powerful it is, the less you need of it.
elblanco
elblanco 1
You do realize that people have tried it before right? that's why the restriction is in place, because people have tried to blow up a plane with liquid bombs.
kthurley
K H 1
They didn't try anything. They made videos describing their proposed plot. None of them had even the slightest experience making explosives, liquid or otherwise.
elblanco
elblanco 1
Yes they did, they attempted it in england years ago. They don't ban anything that isn't alreayd illegal or a weapon, unless someone tried to use it on a plane.
kthurley
K H 1
Nope, they didn't try anything. They dreamed up a plot but didn't even have passports. The basics are here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_transatlantic_aircraft_plot

Being a wikipedia article you might want to check a bit deeper.
elblanco
elblanco 1
Alright well I'll give you that, but if not having passports is what stops you from blowing up a plane with a liquid bomb. Then there should be measures taken so no one with the ability to fly, will try it.

kthurley
K H 1
Try blowing up anything with a liquid bomb and you'll quickly realize how difficult it is. There's a reason the military, mining, and demolition industries gave up on them about 100 years ago.
elblanco
elblanco 1
It's not being used on a mine or for the military, it's plane, it doesn't take that large of an explosion to take one out. On top of that, dynamite is made with nitro glicerine, which is a liquid as well.
kthurley
K H 1
There's a reason that Alfred Nobel invented dynamite. People kept dying trying to mix nitroglycerine. It takes a lot of skill which your typical pretend terrorist doesn't have.
elblanco
elblanco 1
If action movies have taught me anything, it's that most terrorists would hire someone to mix it for them. Also if it's that dangerous, why not just mix it on the plane, that would do the trick. Also what's the big deal about liquids being restricted? if you can't go a few hours with a liquid, you should probably have a perscription or be in the hospital.
kthurley
K H 1
No trained chemist would ever mix liquid explosives for anybody due to the above noted safety issues. At any rate, our points have been made. Have a nice evening :)

elblanco 1
Almost! what about an EVIL chemist?

They have also tried underwear bombs and, as far as I know, you are still allowed to wear underwear on flights.

I just stopped wearing clothes all together when I fly....I don't fly much anymore
elblanco
elblanco 1
Best idea ever.
elblanco
elblanco 1
That's because they scan our clothes, non liquid bombs need a metal component to to create a spark needed to set it off.
bbabis
bbabis 0
I don't think there is anything metal in a match and sandpaper. Add a twisted rubberband and toothpicks and you have a pressure release activated firing device. I just made that up. My point is; TSA's strong-arm rules treating everyone as a terrorist until absolutely proven otherwise are ridiculous.
elblanco
elblanco 1
No metal components is why they have the body scanners, those can pick up non metallic items. But the TSA treating everyone as a threat is completely legitimate, there's no basic look to a terrorist, it could be anyone! Innocent until proven guilty is for a court of law, not security, that's a good way to get people killed.
bbabis
bbabis 1
I give up elblanco. Good luck with your attitude. I'll leave you with a statement from Thomas Jefferson. "Those willing to surrender freedom for security have neither."
elblanco
elblanco 1
Oh no, I'm allowing people to see that I'm no threat to the public, MY FREEDOM IS GONE! Also that quote has been attributed to so many people I'm starting to doubt that anyone said it before the TSA came in existence.
joelwiley
joel wiley 1
I do hope that last bit was satire
elblanco
elblanco 1
the first part was sarcasm, so yes. I'm not joking about the quote though, at this point it's been attributed to half of the founding fathers. Also, before you start complaining about your freedoms being "taken away"(hint: they aren't) you might want to make sure that everyone in the country is truly seen as equal, which is the FIRST LINE of the constitution.

this is starting to sound like a Reddit post

The difference being that the right winger gave up instead of spouting out "facts" someone made up.
augerin
.....and that means exactly what....
elblanco
elblanco 1
It means that most of the people who oppose the TSA are either making things up and ignoring the truth. Or they're inflating stats and stuff to make them seem right. I'll admit that I was probably off with calling them right wingers, because not all TSA haters are conservative.
kthurley
K H 1
I'm decidedly liberal and I HATE the TSA.
joelwiley
joel wiley 1
If you have not done sampling or a census regarding TSA opposition, you are stating an opinion, not fact. My opinion differs significantly. We can agree to disagree.
I strenuously object to the TSA and the way it botches its execution thereof. I consider my views liberal and far from a Tea-Party Libertarian on Medicare.
