It is 30 years since I was last PIC. Now can some of you current people tell me WTF is going on here. Have the machines become so automated that the throttle is forgotton. Airbus have repeatedly called for "basic flying skills to be revisted".

So tell me...between the two of you...what exactly goes on with regard to the proximity of your hand with the throttle levers. When there were three crew members the engineer always always had aclose control of the the levers.

What is it with you current guys?

I fly with guys now that are so dependent on the autopilot and FMS. The FMS took a crap, and on two separate flights I had 2 15000 hr. FO's that couldn't hold a VOR radial from TEB to FL. No f ing concept of wind correction and they were lost when they got a crossing restriction with nothing to calculate it for them. So what did they do, they just descended about 100 miles early...

My God...I see

Fox news SFO covered this item very poorly http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSw8MafUBM0&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DWSw8MafUBM0

In one of the squawks else where certain data of speed and height have been mentioned by an expert reader. His last comment, rather a conclusive one, " quite a roller coaster ride " needs attention. Is it not possible that either the instruments were playing'hide and seek' or the environment? Latter is less likely. And by the time the pilot/s made a visual observation of proximity with the ground , it was too late for a corrective action ! The the oral evidence of the cock pit crew and the black box will give most answers. Let us not jump to conclusions of any kind.

It's refreshing to see a G-(WO)MAN doing their job well.

I agree! She is like Joe Friday (for those old enough to rememger him) - just the facts. The amazing thing is she speaks slowly and distinctly so all the media circus can understand her...I am impressed!

Low+slow+sink rate=?????

You mean they are reading check lists and not looking out the window? Both of them? Maybe the machine was set to autoland? Long flight and asleep? Wrong data entered? Nothing wrong with the machine that is for sure.

Don't know where they were focused but it sure must not have been on as, vs, or even sight picture. I think it's called "asleep at the wheel".

yeah..looks that way to me...and a fire truck ran over a 16 yr old kid?

That is another sad story that probably shouldn't have happened. Hope the autopsy shows she was already deceased. Enough tragedy already.
Derg
Hope she passed without pain.

Pilot error ? Too premature, too unprofessional, too hasty . Focus on ALL angles , or say , use wide angle vision which is the rule for EVERY type of investigation. Start process of elimination BASED on pieces of evidence as they emerge . Bundle them up and make a conclusive irrefutable decision . Not until then !

When you are making a visual approach and you fly a functioning airplane into the ground short of the runway, good excuses are hard to come by.

Will you agree that even mistakes occur due to some reason? There has to be some cause for the effect(error)? We all know fairly well the effect, whether in full details or partial, but what about the causes? Should we not wait for FULL oral evidence of crew of the cock pit and cabin, ATCers and passengers dully substantiated by data from FDR and CVR. Remember they landed short, BUT what prompted them to do so? Isn't landing short fatal whether the strip is around the bay or land? Aborting landing and the failure to abort are secondary and dependent issues.

I'm waiting to hear of something that contributed significantly to the crash other than the 3 pilots. If there is no mechanical failure they will receive a "piss poor piloting award" and some nice parting gifts.
akayemm
Prima facie, the Chairperson, NTSB, finds no error in the system, almost pointing finger towards pilots. But she hastens to add , no conclusions to be drawn until the final report.
I hold SAME views.

It ain't over till the fat lady sings, but I think she's warming up! Lol.

May be, or may be she is preparing us for fictional mystery 1
