In a related story, I see that the airline name, logo, as well as the aircraft registration were covered up. What's up with that?
mpradel
It's a image damage control guideline from Star Alliance.

We've seen similar treatment in the us. When JRoush crashed the Premier @ Airventure or the F16 that overshot the runway the year after.

Not necessarily from *A, they posted on Twitter that that was incorrect. Just a usual procedure (not official) because accidents are negative -- anyone passing by the plane seeing "Thai Airways" might decide not to fly. Happens all the time, an ATR skidded off a runway in Italy and the same steps were taken.

I remember the painting out of the registration markings and the logo as long ago as the mid-1970's when a TAP (Now Air Portugal) B-727 slid off the runway at Madeira (before the field was rebuilt). First thing the Portuguese inspectors did was spray paint the registration numbers and the TAP logo.
PhotoFinish
Actually, they call themselves TAP Portugal and are widely regarded as one of the world's safest airlines, with the above incident in 1977 landing at Madeira in heavy rain, and resulting in a runway excursion on their third and final attempt to land, was their only incident with fatalities in their entire history since 1945.

Indeed, PhotoFinish, I made a mistake about the current name of good old Transportes Aereos Portugueses (my keyboard doesn't have the appropriate accents. I lived in Lisboa for 3 years in the mid-1970's and had occasion to fly to Madiera for business regularly. TAP used Boeing 727-200's on the route, and only a select cadre of pilots were permitted to operate that route. The were in reverse thrust over the threshold, working against a short field and a constant crosswind.

When it is tight enough for reverse over the threshold, probably gonna be a good seat pucker too. Select group or not, you may get over the jitters but you never get used to it.LOL
Moviela
Lucky they were at the new airport. The old one had a golf course between two runways! Sorry to read 18 people taken to the hospital. No fatalities, and an eighteen year old Airbus A330, figure about $39. damage.

Reminds me of the Qantas "Golf Buggy" incident.

Shades of Southwest and LAG; this is probably all we'll here about it.

Slightly better description of the chain of events at touchdown.

This is how news should be reported everywhere. Cold emotionless facts and not a bunch of media hype bullshit.

I guess there is another airplane that can be turned into a hotel now :)

Watch the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3kREPMzMLk children of the magenta. It may make sense of some (some) of the recent spate of accidents and I would recommend that all pilots especially commercial view it. All accident investigation authorities - NTSB, CAA, TAIC, TSC etc.look at human factors obviously including cultural (Pilot and organisational) areas influencing CRM practices. Investigating accidents and countless accident reports over 5 years it is extremely rare that something is simple. Maybe too many people are watching YouTube videos.

Great vid!

Almost certainly part of the causal chain of the Asiana 214 crash at SFO. Also possibly part of the causal chain of the UPS 1354 CFIT crash on approach to BHM.

2 senior pilots, 4 younger ones; 135 big iron operation. This link has been Emailed to each one and is a must read and heed. It is a reality check for some folks. Whether we like it or not, we have a profession to where those inferior will not survive. Hopefully, they will just step aside and not take anyone with them. Some say we are cruel and/or elitist for feeling this way. We are not; we just take seriously our responsibility to be the best that we can be when we take other people's lives in our hand and have no sympathy for one that does not share that view.
akayemm
Dear friend, preacher1, you are right but you are being too kind to the 'inferior pilots' while suggesting that they 'will not survive' !
Infact, at the slightest display of inferiority , such pilots should be kicked out of the league of pilots of every category. And, cancel their license to fly forthwith!

preacher1
preacher1 1
If one is in a position to do so, they generally do. Some are not in that position and unfortunately, get done with a flight and saying they are glad it's over rather than turning someone in. Sometimes too, it is hard to decide whether someone is inferior or just doesn't do things as you would. In most jobs, there is more than one way to do something and both may be fine.

Thai Airways skids off runway at Bangkok's mai airport.

A Thai Airways Airbus A330-300 plane has skidded off the runway while landing at Bangkok's main airport, injuring 14 passengers

... and the first response was to paint out the 'Thai' logos on the tailplane and fuselage with black paint so no one would recognise the carrier... - 'Amazing Thailand' indeed.

Some of my pilot friends of this forum think that being a non pilot I must roam else where OR refrain from commenting.
I am a licensed lawyer. But MUST it mean that I am an intelligent lawyer too ? Same holds valid for EVERY (licensed) pilot of this forum.
The yard stick has to be the rationality and logic of a comment. Not necessarily limited to the correctness ! That part will be decided by persons involved with process of inquiry, devoid of EVERY member of this forum.
If that were not to be so, why almost every comment (from a pilot) on this forum gets counter comments from coprofessionals ?
Please do keep in mind that in case of inquiry and making a judgement of actions, it will be non pilots who will be deciding , ofcourse, on the basis of information given by professionals ! With utmost rationality and logic. Not on the basis of being temperamental and impulsive and biased ! Be it a court of law or a departmental inquiry at any and every level. Lowest to highest in the administration. Every where. No exception, countrywise.

Probably true but as a non aviator, I would think you would be on here to learn and absorb, rather than jus make disparaging remarks as you did yesterday and have in times past. There is a lingo and banter between pilots that is unique to a lot of career fields and you seem to want to change that rather than try and understand it. IMHO
preacher1
preacher1 3
I would add one thing here in reference to your comment about judgmental bodies, Into a court of law, unless just luck, you get a jury of non professional and or non pilots. That said, investigative boards prior to that, such as NTSB or the FAA are generally made up of pilots or those that possess a knowledge of aviation.

Nose gear Landing??? Appears that way........

Thai Blames Landing Gear For A330 Incident
"After touchdown at Suvarnabhumi airport, the landing gear malfunctioned and caused the aircraft to skid off the runway,” Kasemsuvan says in a statement. “Sparks were noticed from the vicinity of the right landing gear near the engine. ... The captain took control of the aircraft until it came to a complete stop and passengers were evacuated from the aircraft emergency exits.”

Some people on this forum are SO capable that they can determine all causes WITHOUT any investigation !
Because they are GOD ! Or God in ......
Moviela
On a flight to Tel Aviv a man sitting in 13C stood, walked forward, opened the cockpit door and went inside. I asked the FA who that man thinks he is?

She said I could relax. That man is God, but he thinks he is a pilot.

Why go far , check comments of your friend phil rudd down below !
"phil rudd
asian pilot + airbus = disaster "

and yet again

"hil rudd
actually its

asian pilot + anything with wings = disaster.

they've shown they cant fly a boeing either. And a boeing is about as easy and reliable as you can get."

You too seem to be unable to think out of the box .

My only comment in this whole thing is that Mr. Rudd is an accomplished aviator, has paid his dues, as most of us old heads have, and while irritating at times, he is entitled to his opinion. It is your right to express your opinion but as a non aviator, express it somewhere else. I think what James and a few more are trying to tell you is STFU.
akayemm
Do you mean to say NTSB has been created to inquire into accidents caused by Non Americans ? Because Americans DO NOT cause accidents ?

Dear friend james801, I am sure that 'sweeping remarks' or condemning people 'across the board' can not be considered rational in any group of people. Whether just social or professional (specialists).
And I am sure this forum CAN NOT profess or encourage similar approach !

Question. Can the tiller turn the nose gear while it's stowed? The passenger said that the AC turned sharply to the right when the nose gear touched down. If it was turned(like by the tiller) when it contacted the runway, then that would cause what the passenger described. Though this was an Airbus, so you never know what they are going to do.
