ANA Bidding Farewell to the 747

제출됨

All Nippon Airways will retire its last two passenger-carrying Boeing 747s next month, ending an era in which the American-made jumbo jet was a frequent presence in Japanese skies, working both the international and domestic routes of ANA and Japan Airlines. (www.nytimes.com) 기타...

jeeez I'm getting old... really never liked the idea of flying over the cold, foggy, blustery North Pacific on 2 engines.... lining up at Shemya in the middle of winter? shooting a single engine approach at night in the snow at a Russian airfield... hope the worst NEVER happens... hate to see the 747s go...

You ain't the only one. I had to make the transition from a 707 and 3 on the flight deck to a 757 and 2 on the deck all at once. You never really get use to it. Our mx was always top notch and I never had that engine problem but when you know there is only water down there and you got to make your alternate on one, I believe you get closer to God. LOL

With the increased engine reliability, they may end up years down the road have a transition from twins to single engine aircraft. The same way we are transitioning from 3 and 4 to twins at the moment. Reliability would have to become very, very consistent first.

Aldo as we switch propulsion some day, we may even switch to more engines per plane. If a new propulsion type is just as efficient with a small engines as with large ones, without impacting performance, then it may make sense in some future designs to have many engines.

But for the foreseeable future, barring any major change, twins will rule the skies.

I guess so, but with a twin, you have one to go with if one does quit. If a single engine quit, you either better have a good glider or know how to swim. LOL

Yeah, that reliability would have to be fullproof.

Well, the AB 340 bit the dust and now both the 747 and 380 are on the ropes. It won't be long before twins will rule the skies as far as pax go. There are plenty of cargo outfits that will pick them up over time but even the 380 will have problems there because of it's size.

Agree.

Though Emirates may end up making a massive A380 fleet work with subsided fuel from their own wells.

Other airlines (with a me-too me-too attitude but without any of their own petroleum wells) may end up losing their shirts trying to match Em's A380 service.

Well, they should have plenty if we continue producing here. There is a lot of oil up North in the Bakken and we'll see more if O will ever let the keystone go, but I'll not start that fight here.

Yes. But Exxon, BP or Shell won't be getting into the airline business any time soon. They'd rather sell their petroleum to the highest bidder. They have no strategic interest in using an airline to make their sovereign territory a more relevant place.

the worst was that you didn't have the FE to kick around anymore

Yeah I did too. as all this happened, my FO retired and FE moved up so I was stuck with him and had to train him out too. LOL
