The MD80 family of planes have been good little work horses. But storms with heads above 40,000 feet would be a challenge for any plane. And tropical storms can develop so quickly. This is a situation where the Black Boxes will be critical to understanding the crash. I hope they are found undamaged. The timing is so sad because these folks will never get the attention their lost lives deserve.

Aeronautically speaking, imagine you're reading a 5-yr-old's post - am I wrong in thinking no matter how quickly a storm cues up, the crew would have the opportunity to radio it was encountering unstable weather to request a change of route? I've heard tropical storms come up quickly, but surely weather equipment shows something brewing out there. Anyone?

He called for a route change on account of wx

Gosh, I need to work on my reading comprehension. I went back and re-read the article before posting that and STILL didn't see that. I'm worried about me!

The plane sent its last message around 9:30 p.m. ET asking Niger air control to change its route because of heavy rains in the area, Burkina Faso Transport Minister Jean Bertin Ouedraogo said.

This has been a very bad year for aviation :( My deepest condolences to the friends and family of victims to this Air Algiers flight, the TransAsia crash, MH17 & MH370
thompson36532
It's been more of a year defined by poor judgment and human behavior when it comes to war than a problem with aviation in general, in my opinion.
preacher1
Well, what you say is the truth so far. It will be interesting to see the outcome of all of it, especially this one. Kinda sounds like wx may have played a role in this one and the TransAsia. Guess we'll have to wait for the boxes on these 2. They have them on TranAsia and last I heard, 1 had been recovered on this one; don't know which.

I have one big fat Greek question (I'm Greek, LOL). Why is the intentional shooting down of an airliner considered a "crash"? Did it miss an approach, hit inclement weather, flame out, or stall? Any of these, yes, but a missile tearing you to shreds is not a crash, at least per my understanding.
preacher1
Never really thought about it but it came out of the sky and hit the ground, killing everybody. What should it be called??
jet4ang
jet4ang 1
How about a terrorist attack? I'm thinking it was already destroyed before it the ground?
preacher1
Well, it still crashed. This is not verified but here is a link to a video supposedly of it coming down. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DaQzMv89eeo

Actually that video supposedly isn't MH17 according to this post.

Dear non-russian speaking youtube members. This is not Malaysian plane downed in Ukraine. On this video you can see the Ukrainian military plane AN-30 downed by pro-russian separatists a couple of days before MH-17 accident.
preacher1
Well, like I said, it wasn't verified and I don't speak Russian. It was sent to me. I'll still call MH17 a crash, regardless of cause.

I'm not arguing but from what I saw on other videos of different aircraft, the term they used was "shot down". Anyway, it's great chatting with you. I read your posts all the time and enjoy what you have to say. I'm off to work so have a great day.
preacher1
10-4, LOL, don't work too hard.
preacher1
Just in the For What it's worth dept. It was shot down but when it impacted the ground, it became a crash.LOL

More details at http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/air-algerie-flight-ah5017-disappears-from-radar-over-north-africa-1.2716455. Apparently the plane is an Airbus A320, not an MD83.
