10 Amazing Abandoned Airports and Airbases

제출됨

You’d think the sky-high costs of constructing an airport would ensure that some boss, somewhere, would make sure they stayed in operation as long as possible. But times change, technology moves on, and geopolitical strife interferes with even the best-laid plans. As a result, forgotten commercial airports and military airbases lie abandoned around the world, their once state-of-the-art equipment now rusting into ruins fit for cows, car races, and intrepid Instagrammers. One might mention Flugplatz-Finow, near Eberswalde, Germany, some 50 km from Berlin. During the cold was, it was home to amazing concrete bunkers, hardened hangars, and an ambiance as nice as could be found in the DDR (Not too nice, actually). Now it hosts a few, very few, private flights, some questionable companies trying to sell surplus eastern European airplanes, and I don't know what else. I visited several years ago, and was struck at the massiveness of everything--the hangar doors ran on railroad tracks, and were maybe 12 foot thick concrete. A spooky place!

Certainly a lot of history here...

Resolution Island DEW line base east of Baffin Island! Protected by shear cliffs from unwanted visitors!

In 1978 there were still uniforms in lockers and Saturday Evening Post still in book racks!

Time capsule!

I was stationed at NAS Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico during the 60’s.
Built in 1943- [Runways 7/25@11,000 & 18/36@5,000]
Made from a lot of concrete. Base closed in 2004 and given to Puerto Rico with great aspirations for the future, but nothing panned out. Very sad as viewed from Google Earth.

I was stationed just up the road from El Toro at Tustin MCAS(H). We often flew GCAs into El Toro. That was always fun keeping an eye out for fast movers (we had other names for them too). Tustin was closed prior to El Toro sadly. While it was the smalled base area wise, it had more units than other larger bases.

Even the place I was born no longer exists as a military installation. NY state repurposed everything including the runway and planes still fly in and out of it as it is not the international airport as well as a having an FOB now.

That Spanish one at the end, is that where Top Gear filmed recently?
WhiteKnight77
Yeah, Top Gear US is filmed there at El Toro. If you watch some commercials, some are filmed in the hangers at Tustin. There was even a scene from one of the Austin Powers films that was filmed there.

Mythbusters uses the former Alameda NAS as well as the Crows Landing Naval Auxiliary Air Field and one of the former housing areas to one of the bases. They also have used the dry docks at the former Mare Island Naval Shipyard.

No no, Top Gear UK this year. Somewhere in Spain they went through an abandoned airport & even drag raced supercars down the runway. But they didn't name the airport.

I couldn't tell as I haven't watched Top Gear in some time.

I was a member of a Boy Scout troop at Nicosia airport in the 1980s. It was run by members of the British and Canadian UN Peacekeeping forces. It was surreal seeing the abandoned terminal all the time.
