It would be interesting to know - to be fair - what was done to the engine and systems after each incident. This can be either one of those very very rare statistical anomalies, a problem that was not identified so it's a learning opportunity or, simply, stupid and risky decision making by Delta maintenance.

Of course that information is not revealed because I don't think that's the intent of this article. It's very frustrating to me as an aircraft mechanic to see articles written this way.

The informational part of the article reads like he was summarizing Aviation Herald.
http://avherald.com/h?article=4a97fe49&opt=0 (the first incident with links to the 2nd and 3rd)

The last two paragraphs read like an awkward high school essay attempt to present a profound lesson (maintenance and safety are important. Ya, thanks for the heads up).

I see the plane spent 3 days in Shannon. Then to Detroit and back into revenue service.

@Larry, I agree with your assessment of the article. Given that the author is going to graduate from University in 2018 I am guessing he still has a lot to learn.

What's the intent of the article?

Many would think that it's just for information, but they do it to stir up attention and arguments, really. So people argue and quarrel. What it is, is free advertising for Delta Airlines

Each issue with this aircraft was a different problem unique to itself. The real problem here is the news media playing up the incident and not what maintenance found to be the cause of the issues. Having spent 4 years in the Air Force as and Aircraft Repair I can state that many times an issue in the air will ground test okay. When that happens you test the entire system if you cannot duplicate the problem you cannot fix it. It would be nice to know what Delta maintenance found when trouble shooting and what repairs if any were done. If none were found on the ground and two issues with the same engine caused the loss of service for all most a weeks time I would bet they changed the engine when the plane reached a maintenance base.

The anti-ice issue had nothing to do with the engine and most likely cause was a sensor issue. Wing anti-ice issues drove us nuts as most times they ground checked okay. You would write it up that way and ask for an inflight check. days or weeks would go by without a problem.

So which is it? Were they unique occurrences or was it a single problem that they weren't able to test properly on the ground?

Maybe the engine is a "lemon". Might be time to swap it.......
sanukjim
The time to change it was after the second engine problem. To save money (new engine, crew to fly to Amsterdam, engine, engine change gear, etc) they could have been putting the passengers and crew in danger.

Delta should have dragged the engine off the plane after the second incident!
bartmiller
It would be interesting to know where the engine received its last maintenance checks (time since A, B, C or D check). And where these checks occurred? Is Delta outsourcing its major check?

My bet is a wiring fault and/or the computer system. The 330 still have Kapton insulated wires. In 2002 an advisory was issued that they may pose a problem, Boeing quit using that insulation and even NASA knew it was a problem. A wire partially grounding or overheating and changing its impedance can cause all sorts of havoc in the system of the very sensitive computers in any aircraft.
rmchambers
I'm with you, whatever CPU is responsible for the care and feeding of that engine needs to be interrogated.

hee hee hee!

Sounds like a need for a major on the starboard engine

Annoying nonsense article. Three unrelated problems on the same engine. Vibration problem, we don't know the cause - could have been an indication problem. The compressor stalls - pneumatic problem it appears. Oil pressure problem - nothing to do with the other two items. Age of the airplane - 11 years? Doesn't have anything to do with this. How long has this engine been on wing? That's the question. Clickbait. Move on nothing to see hear.

I guess it could be a massive coincidence. But how often does this happen? A lot? Then maybe this isn't such a big deal in itself but rather something that we should be concerned about on a larger scale. Rarely if st all? Then what the hell is going on with this engine?
raleedy
Reading the whole story, I infer that after each of the first two incidents the aircraft was parked, then returned to service. How about fault tracing, and fault repair? I've seen Delta reboot an aircraft for electrical issues, but not for mechanical ones, and I think I know why.

I wish I hadn't read that.my buddy just flew Rouge back and forth from Toronto to Dublin and of course I tracked him and that's a big ocean to cross on one.
hobofood
Shouldn't have happened in the first place, let alone 3 times, but back to the "lemon" theory (@MikeMohle), as long as it's replaced, it shouldn't happen again. And we're worrying too much. As long as there were no casualties, then it's not all that bad. We're too materialistic. As of May, the Market Cap was about $33 billion, so they can afford a new engine, for pete's sake.

Well, this isn't a tire that keeps going flat after we patch it. Slightly bigger deal here.
hobofood
But is it really? No injuries or fatalities, and sure they'll have to pay, but to Delta, it's like pocket change.
kPerry1010
How about not slandering Airlines. Maintenance issues happen all the time on airplanes. That's why there are multiple and redundant systems. Discrepancies like this happen all the time everyday but rarely affect safety.
btweston
btweston 3
Did we read the same article? No one is slandering anyone. The article reports three things that happened. That's what news is. If you think that it's just the most unlikely coincidence imaginable, you may come to that conclusion.

kPerry1010
Slandering based on the fact that the media here is reporting maintenance issues on this aircraft. It singles out delta airlines making them look like they have a poor maintenance program. These types of mechanical failures happen on all airlines and all types of aircraft
