I am a Newby here and I think these Squawks are outstanding. I just read about the A340 and it sounded like it was not a popular aircraft with the airlines and did not sell well. I am totally amazed by the joysticks. Are the sticks a trademark of Air Bus or does Boeing install them as well? Thanks.

Airbus uses the side sticks, Boeing uses the yokes (the steering wheel looking thingy).

A source of endless controversy- Boeing "links" the yokes to each other and the autopilot. If one crew moves their yoke the other follows along. The yokes and throttle levers also track the autopilot and autothrottles. On Airbus, the sidesticks and throttle levers are not linked and can be operated independently by each crew member. There is no visual indication of crew or autopilot control inputs to the aircraft. (A bit over simplified but you get the general idea...)

Well, kenish, this brings to mind Eastern 401 where the Auto-Pilot was disengaged in error and the L-1011 started loosing altitude. I assume both yokes were moving together and causing the AC to drop slowing as the yokes moved forward. Would this not have happened with the AB sidesticks? Maybe this is the wrong comparison.Just a thought.

That's a very good question. On the Piper Cherokee if I try to fly, for example, with it trimmed all the way up, I have to push forward on the yoke quite a bit, to keep the nose level - if I let go, the yoke would come all the way back by itself. I have no clue how the Airbus (or Boeing for that matter) handles this. Does it have this kind of feedback? Obviously it would be computer-driven, not mechanical.

The airbus has an FMS..flight management system..that takes the MEAN or AVERAGE of the inputs from BOTH controls and if the FMS decides it is "within the envelope" it will expedite and go for the mean value. I am not an avionics engineer and very very few qualified avionics engineers will talk publically about software gliches. The A340 aircraft is a fabulous machine if you are a passenger, in my view, if it had a dual yoke control it would be almost as good as the Boeing 74 series.

A340 was the best product AB made. Apart from the joysticks.
