A Federal ban on high-powered green laser pointers???

제출됨

90 percent of laser incidents involve green lights. The green laser pointers are apparently preferred by pranksters because the green light travels farther. They also are more likely to injure a pilot’s eyes. (newyork.cbslocal.com) 기타...

The people who do this should just be done away with.. No reason for this... I don't call them pranksters, it is not a prank or even close... These people should stand trial for Attempted Manslaughter 1 count for each passenger on board.

Misuse of such a laser is already against the law. The stupidity of throwing a piece of paper into the fray in the form of a new law against their use is typical. I have attended some educational seminars at a university observatory where the instructors used lasers to point out constellations, etc. and I can imagine the red tape and stifling bureaucracy such a law would create for the facility simply to continue to use what they already have in the responsible way that they're already practicing.

Witch hunt against astronomers!

But seriously, only certified astronomy geeks should be allowed to have green lasers. Now, for the test: What's your favorite episode of Cosmos?

There are many other uses for lasers, green included. I and many more need them for our guns. Red and green lasers compliment each other when a bad guy needs to be lit up like a christmas tree. If poor choices continue to be made, the lasers are not as big of a problem as what can follow them.

That's just Chuckie, Anything for a vote no matter how dumb the idea. Here in the real world, it would seem that vigorous prosecution and stiff penalties is the way to handle the short term solution. The long term solution will take care of itself as planes begin to autonomously fly themselves with pilots along for the ride and ultimately with no pilots at all to be blinded.

Lots of people use them for work. Our Nanny state is at it again. You can't outlaw stupidity.

Didn't we fight WWII because of someone who felt the same way?
WALLACE24
Not all is stupidity. Some want to see the aircraft crash. Attempted murder.

Agreed I bet they won't fell guilty if they learned they cause the plane to crash or they caused some one to lose their eye sights.
We should pass a law, anyone points a laser to the cockpit. Shall either Life in prison (100+ attempted murder), put on a FAA no flight list or get pointed by a green laser IN THE EYE.

It sounds to me like you might be one of the first ones caught by such a law. Just sayin'.

Why not treat Lasers like guns?

They are Shenghao. That is the whole point of this article. The government believes it's the device that needs to be controlled and not the behavior.

There's already laws banning the sale of "high powered" lasers, so what is this new proposed law?

You can't put the green laser pointer genie back in the bottle; there must be hundreds of thousands of them out there. It makes much more sense to incorporate laser-light triggered liquid-crystal filtering systems into cockpit glass or make an adhesive retro-fit for existing windows. Yeah it would be expensive but it would also be pretty much 100% effective, and the added bonus is it would give terrorists one less possible weapon to bring a plane down (an even higher powered laser I imagine could instantly blind everyone in the cockpit permanently). Thought I had myself a patent-able idea here but apparently it's already been thought of.

Seems that something like what is used on arc welding helmets these days. When I learned you had to flip it down and hope you didn't move from where you wanted to start the weld. Now the window just 'magically' darkens right when you need it. Seems a similar set of glasses could be made for pilots. But as others have mentioned, we need to make the miscreants who think it's fun to paint a plane with a green laser understand that it's a really bad idea.
WALLACE24
I think they already know it's dangerous. You don't hear about them blinding themselves or their family.

Very interesting. Being LCDs and microprocessor controlled, it shouldn't be a difficult next step to determine the coordinates that the offending laser came from by adding WAAS GPS to the mix.
buckeem
not to mention a few jobs in the mix. as opposed to the jobs lost by more regulation
