Add an apostrophe after the e in airlines in the web address. Great story. Another kudos to Southwest.

Outstanding for SWA this will definitely be where people go in those situations. When my ex's father had a heart-attack years back and was set for surgery I called SWA and told them I was buying the ticket for her RT. They got her on an immediate flight and discounted the ticket when they were never asked.

Reward this behavior - you'll get more of it.

Fly Southwest, and let them know why . . . especially when you make the researvation.

Tell you friends.

Penalizing negative behavior, often has little or no effect becuase it's pervasive in customer service models today . . . the inertia of the machine is hard to overcome.

Positive behavior is rare and has to be nourished and encourage to grow.

My home town is in the birth state of this airline. I read the story. Can't say anything more than what has already been. True nature of an airline that cares.

I believe we need to mention that there are others behind the scene who made this happen. Someone had to make the Captain aware of the situation; otherwise this alignment of the stars could not have happened. It goes to show SWA knows how to provide customer service at all levels, not just through those with high visibility. Kudos, for whoever took the initiative.
kldfligtrrt
so happy to know there are people who still care.

There is policy and there is also the right thing to do.

Finally, an airline that places the passenger's needs and comfort first, much like what happened before deregulation. Southwest, you have my next trip, even if I have to go out of my way.

And these types of cases are just one of the many reasons I fly and promote Southwest!!! No other airline will go the distance like they will.

Southwest is one of a kind, and always has been. Maybe not the most comfortable way to travel (no assigned seats), but a very smart business model that has kept them from resorting to beating us to death with extra charges for baggage, etc. and a lot of employees who seem to actually give a s*#t about their customers. Kudos to SWA.
FedExMan
Wow.....Being in the business 12 minutes is a huge amount of time. Bravo Zulu to the pilot!! Southwest has always been my choice for travel. They seem to treat you better than everyone else even when you are on standby.

I believe all airlines offer the disounted tickets for funerals. (At least they used to.)

These guys are good! My best friend, who I was a flight instructor with a few years ago, and another good friend I used to fly with, are both Piots for SW! I fly my daughters on them all of the time too!

That pilot should be commended for that act of unbelieveable kindness! Kudos to him and his crew!

None of these links work. A shame, I would have liked to read the whole story.

Here is the link I just used and it worked:

Be patient with the link, it took about two minutes. My wife was on a US Air flight that was stuck at the gate for over an hour with no food. The pilot ordered everyone on board a pizza from a pizzeria at the terminal and paid with his own credit card.

Thanks to both Jeff Yost and Brian Wright. I will try again lateron, hoping that it will take a little less to get into this story.

I fly these guys weekly, and this just sounds like Southwest (exceptional) business as usual. The way the flight crews treat returning service people, special occassions, first time flying kids and the like always impresses. This was over the top! Herb would be proud.

Reason # 254 for flying Southwest.

If Delta, American, United, Continental tried half as hard as SWA they might be able to stay out of the red. As a former platinum FF with Delta, I found it hard to get an upgrade, a extra bag of peanuts... The captain and those responsible for his awareness should receive a accommodation... Great decision captain... Great airline, keep up the good sense SWA.... This story just earned you thousands of loyal fliers...

This is the kind of action/approach that makes Southwest such a successful airline!! Way to go Southwest and kudo's to the pilot!!!! Thay pilot is a hero. To bad the other airline headquartered in Dallas/Ft Worth doesn't have a heart or show this kind of compassion. They probably would have fired the pilot and charged the passenger a massive change fee. (Love the "change fee" TV ads Southwest!!)
jmcl99
AMEN, CHIP CUSTOMER SERVICE MIGHT AS WELL CLOSE DOWN AT THE OTHER AIRLINES OTHER THAN SWA.... NOW, THAT'S A GOOD COST SAVING MEASURE... GET RID OF THE NON-EXISTENT, EXISTENT CUSTOMER SERVICE... YOU CAN GET ABOUT AS MUCH TLC AND CUSTOMER SERVICE FROM THE FED GOVERNMENT... ANOTHER KUDOS FOR SWA... SOUTHWEST, GIVE THIS PILOT A PAID LEAVE OF ABSENCE TO TAKE A WELL DESERVED VACATION... LOVE YOUR NO BAGGAGE FEE COMMERCIAL...

The entire "culture" of most airlines would preclude this sort of action. Southwest, though, has always been a very human-oriented company (human as opposed to CPAs and other lower forms of life.) Paying attention to the people that have made your company successful is the way for continued success for any company, and Southwest has realized this from the very start. The attitude that led to this wonderful response to a very human tragedy permeates Southwest from the top down, and kudos to them all for remembering that it is people that really matter, not spreadsheets!
delphiniumeve
Regarding 'bereavement' fares...back about 8 years ago they just became another opportunity to scr3w the customer. It is better to just buy regular ticket. (This experience applied to Continental, American Airlines, and Southwest). Now, I do have to say in this particular incident - yay Southwest for doing the 'right' thing.
kipandpaula
Another reason why we love SWA so much! What true humanitarian efforts from start to finish. Thank God for compassionate people!
Gentleman1st39
The way SWA treats all it's customers is why I only fly them unless I would have to drive more than 2 hours to get to my destination. Congratulations to a caring and compassionate Captain and Airline for the service you provided to this poor Grandfather. Out prayers are with him and his family and for SWA continued success. You are the "only way to fly".
