Trees, Birds, Ponds: Mexico City's Ancient Lake Reclaims Scrapped Airport

제출됨

Bright green stalks of weeds are sprouting from the ground where planes were supposed to take off at a new Mexico City airport as officials let nature take over in their bid to transform the marshy swath of an ancient lake into a giant park. (www.voanews.com) 기타...

There once was a show about how Mother Nature would take over cities once humans were no longr in the mix. Look at places like Pripyat in the Ukraine near the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant where nature is taking over and you can see it even better. They should not build a park, but let nature do its thing.

Yes, PBS had a special (perhaps 10 years ago) about what would happen if there were no more people on earth. It was interesting to see what "went down" forst. i do recall the NYC subways lasted longer than i expected.

That's it. I thought it amazing when I compare it to places I have seen and been to. At PHF in Newport News, there is an old Nike site on the airport grounds. The launch towers are still there, for now, but the place is overgrown with trees and other ground cover now.

I don't remember the exact story. Legend has it that when the Spanish Conquistadors conquered Mexico their tribal chief hid all the gold, and they had a lot of it in a lake in what is now the Mexico City area. Would be awesome if they found it.

Not exactly. When Spaniards tried to escape from the city with the melted gold they took away from Moctezuma, they were discovered. In the ensuing battle, the mules and soldiers that were carrying the gold were sunken into the lake and drowned. The gold have never been found, and many people, including mexican presidents, tried to found that gold, by desecating the lake. That victory for the Aztecs is known as the "Sad Night" by the spaniards, that a year later returned to the city and conquered it.

Would be better if I found it, John!

BTW, the scrapped airport is on the oposite side of the the lake, where that battle took place.

I'd like to see you find it. I don't know you, but hey, someone deserves to find it!

Do they employ surveyors in Mexico or just drug Lords?
