Wild-Looking ‘Open Rotor’ Engine Could Cut Airliner Emissions by a Massive 20 Percent
Airlines are a major source of airborne pollution, and making them more sustainable is a goal of governments and the aviation industry alike. There have been several proposed solutions to this problem by private companies and elected officials, but a new sort of engine could reduce emissions and fuel consumption without having to sacrifice the existing convenience of air travel. Outside of the fancier blades the Russian TU-95 "Bear" has been running this system since 1956.
OK got it. I have great name for this design: "Super Duper Turboprop". Thank you, that will be $5000. LOL
This would certainly keep people from being sucked into an engine, but the alternative may be even worse! Not sure I like this system.
I thought one of the main features of a ducted fan was to cut noise and prevent the blade tips from breaking the sound barrier.
