United and American Airlines place price caps on some cities to help Southwest customers get home

Many Southwest customers have been desperately trying something – anything – that will get them back home. But some passengers have been horrified to find other airlines posting last-minute flights to their destinations that can cost thousands of dollars. United and American Airlines say they have a solution: The airlines will place price caps on travel to and from select cities, the companies told CNN. Although it didn’t specifically mention Southwest, American implied the price caps were… (www.msn.com) 기타...

Not all markets. When SWA canceled my flight I looked for another carrier and UAL’s price TPA/BWI on 12/28 was $3,482 pp one way.

I drove.

With ripoffs like this they can do all the press releases they like about how they aren’t taking advantage of the situation in some markets while totally taking advantage in others.

That’s the big problem flying SWA and LCC’s. Electronic tickets and no interline ticketing agreements. In th old days Airline A would accept Airline B tickets gladly or at least accept the paper ticket and exchange after departure for a FIM. We skated on several cancelled flights but somehow got on an on time flight and our baggage was monitored from behind the scenes and arrived on our flight with us two days later (not WN)

This depends on what you paid on airline A. If you booked a $199 fare on A but the last minute fare on Airline B is $599, you pay the difference. Not quite like the old days thanks to AA’s, and now everybody’s yield management system.

Your choice. At least you have the option of a ticket.

Wow that was really nice of United and American. Because as we all know Southwest would have Never done that for them!

I just love how Southwest management blames everything on the weather. It's a tried & true old ploy. The simple fact is Southwest SHUT DOWN their complete operation for 2-3 days to reset their outdated computer scheduling system. Their commitment is to money NOT the passenger. Go screw yourself, your on your own. Until they upgrade their scheduling software I'd stay away from this airline. Lots of luck on getting reimbursed for you out of pocket expenses. That's many months away, regardless of what management says.

Not that it would matter, but I'd counter by pointing out that all the other airlines experienced the same weather, and none experienced the failure that Southwest just did.

THAT, goes without saying! It’s quite obvious, since they were the only airline to cancel that many flights, and for so long a period!

Is that documented? The system was shut down intentionally during the holiday?? If you can prove that, a lot of lawyers and millions of clients want to talk to you.

Yes, they capped the prices at four times SW rates. Not a huge concession. They are still double the “pre-disaster” prices offered by the majors.

I looked at flying from the DFW area to PHL on January 10th. American’s fare was $338 and Southwest’s was $313. All of AA’s flights were nonstop and all of SWA’s required a connection.

Many years ago, for the heck of it, I flew during the Summer from BHM to the DFW area to visit relatives. Normally I drove twice a year as an easy two day trip but didn’t feel like driving this time. Always made it a two day going & coming as I liked to get off the Interstate to see things, once I drove the entire distance via two lane US routes just to be different
.

No knock on SWA, but @ the time it was a connecting flight to DAL (now a nonstop) whereas a AA nonstop flight in a Mad Dog. I took the Mad Dog as I didn’t feel like going through a connecting flight & now treasure the opportunity to fly on a Mad Dog before they went away.

My friend tried to fly from Phoenix to Minneapolis via SWA. He made it as far as Denver but never to Minneapolis. It cost him $1K for him and his wife to fly back to Phoenix.
