Wasn't it automation (taking the pilot out of the loop) that caused the 737max crashes?

Quote: "Singapore Airlines has stepped up the cleaning procedures at all premises" Does that mean that it was never so diligent before the pendemic?

I have become very sceptical of airlines, or any most other industries for that matter, when they start talking about 'customer experience' in lieu of passenger comfort and convenience.

I think we need to regulate the industry again. Deregulation has brought a lot of this on, the pandemic was the catalyst that brought the problems out into the open. Deregulation allowed budget airlines to prosper which has caused the full service airlines to make drastic cuts to their fare structures and their service to their customers in order to compete and to survive. That in turn has caused airline profit margins to shrink. It is only right that travellers should be refunded if the airline is unable to meet its contractual commitment to its customer, regardless of the cause. Insurance companies are the scrooges that sit back and watch but nearly always find a way out of honouring their commitments. Perhaps they need more regulation too. Unfortunately it is always the customer that losses out!

I absolutely agree with the message in this headline!

The practice of nominating an alternate is based on very good reasons and cost is not one of them. Furthermore, it can be EXTREMELY expensive in more ways than one if a bad thought process turns into a tragedy.

That was an appalling landing. We criticise airlines for not training pilots properly but when a pilot does something as irresponsible and stupid as this one did we criticise the airline again for berating him. I wonder whether those that say this pilot is a hero or that he did a wonderful job of landing that plane actually know anything about flying aeroplanes. I agree FULLY with Mike SUT's comment below.

Rubbish! The preliminary report on the Indonesian accident pointed fingers at airline management, training and engineering departments. It was apparent that certain crew had not being trained properly or were inadequately trained because the crew of the earlier flight, even though they had problems, were able to successfully resolve and to report on them. It was management, training and engineering that failed to make the necessary repairs or notify the requisite actions.

What about the 747!? That was an innovation that went through extensive certification as did the B777. Boeing lost the plot with the 737 max because of a paranoia about Airbus. Airbus was, and has proven to be, the winner because of this.
