That's a bit like saying that your car worked perfectly until a State Trooper came anong and gave you a ticket. No ody noticed the faulty altimeters until someone came along and wanted to use a lane that the instrument is blocking. More to the point, the cell phone companies paid for that bandwidth and the alitimeter operators didn't.
None of that matters. Airlines use various data to tout their on-time performance: wheels-up, flying time, landing, and so on. The only useful metric answers the simple question, "Did I arrive on time?" which is when the aircraft door opens at the arrival gate. Everything else in between is pointless.
Seems to me that VA needs to tighten up its credentials tracking. And, how did the co-pilot not know his/her training certifications were incomplete? Not sure I'd want to fly with a co-pilot with such disregard for the passengers to cause unnecessary delay and inconvenience.
Why is this news? Southwest normally flies over 4,000 flights daily. Even with as much as half their schedule curtailed (i.e., 2,000 flights) 56 flights is less than 3% of their schedule. Although that would seem high normally, it doesn't seem unreasonable, or even remarkable considering the logistics of such massive recent impacts
No. The airlines shouldn't get a bye on the backs of their customers, who are also being squeezed in the current economy, and who shouldn't be forced into being de facto lenders. It also sets a terrible precedent of allowing companies to be paid for involuntary undelivered goods and services. Let the airlines struggled along with all of us.
