Instead of overhead speakers blaring, why not try speakers set for a much lower level and mount them to the underside of the banks of seats in waiting areas. Speaker feeds zoned for the gate the seats are located. I have used speakers under seats in many TV studios for sound reinforcement of the talent mics used on stage. Subtle - not BLARING. Then, once on the plane, I understand the FAA requirement for the safety video or live action demonstration for the FA's. What needs improvement is the quality and perceived speaker level of the audio from the handset microphones used for live announcements. Between FA's not knowing how to speak into the handset, the plosive breath sounds from their spiel, the coiled handset cable that is so old one hears more static than speech due to the cable being worn out. Same comments can be addressed to the announcements from the cockpit crew. Don't get me started on the endless credit card offers that as I understand it, the FA's are REQUIRED (av

The article states "Both flights are operated with Boeing 737-8 aircraft". If this is true, where are the refueling stops? Perhaps the service operates with 787-8 aircraft? If true, authors should proofread before posting.

If this flight turned SSW over Long Island and the pilot was incapacitated, how was this aircraft not noticed transiting some of the heavily air traffic routes for arrivals and departures-EWR / PHL without communications?

Reports state that the A321 was on final passing 700' altitude. At that altitude, the cabin was probably not pressurized, thereby allowing the door to be opened in flight.

With UA stepping up long haul services across the Pacific & Atlantic, UA needs to step up the onboard experience. The catering product and its service needs a complete revamp along with attitude adjustments to the much of the cabin staff. Banish the Zatar Chicken and the mystery soggy vegetables to a big gray Rubbermaid trash can. Not sure what can be done with cabin staff needing attitude adjustments as cabin staff have collective bargaining protections. If only the uninspired cabin staff realized they are alienating UA customers. UA is close to loosing this 2MM + 1K passenger to DL.

Longer record time (25+ hr) should be required for all CVR and data recorders. It's not like voice and data are still recorded on physical tape in an analogue format. Convert the voice to a 48k digital format and record hours of preflight, flight, & post flight cockpit voice for each flight. My Tascam SSD recorder has the capacity to record many hours on a CF card. SSD's (solid state drives) are relatively inexpensive. But I'm sure that by the time the FAA finished the certification process, years and millions of dollars would have been wasted. For redundancy, two recorders, each recording the cockpit audio, could be fitted into the avionics system of each aircraft. This would allow for better survivability of the recorders and function when recovered from an accident or safety inquiry.
