Grumman G-73 Mallard (VH-TGA)
Very nice TAA Barrier Reef Mallard at Essendon Victoria on 24 8 1963 by the late John Hopton
Comments
A great shot of a classic Grumman! I would assume that TAA needed the Mallard back in 1963 to convey guests from Mackay on the central Queensland coast, across 25 miles of water to Brampton Island. By 1967, an airstrip had been constructed on Brampton, which involved cutting through a hill. They were then able to fly brand new DHC 6 Series 100 (short nose) Twin Otters on this short sector.
Thanks Chris
I went to Brampton quite a few times and loved the Twin Otters coming in over the beach - perfect for the short strip - but would much rather have done the trip in the Mallard

Thanks Ian!...I landed on that strip in 1967 when I was in Fifth grade. I was sitting in the backseat of a hired C172 that my Dad was flying. I still remember the amazing chalky looking white strip freshly cut through the hillside. Watching the brandspanking turboprop Twotters coming and going for an entire week was the highlight of my school vacation...
Chris - i put a Tony Arbon pic of VH-TGF up for you - for the memory
That is one beautiful plane!
