McDonnell Douglas FA-18 Hornet — - F/A-18E Super Hornetbr /A rare photo capture at NFL --- rare because departures from Runway 25-7 are extremely unusual. As we were told, the only time Runway 25-7 is utlized for takeoffs is when the wind shifts around and begins blowing increasingly strongly from the west, and when that occurs, the wind rapidly becomes so strong and gusty that, in the interest of safety, training sessions are soon suspended. As a result, no aircraft take off and after any aircraft that are already in the air are recovered, no more flying takes place.br /During our visit, the wind did shift and begin blowing from the west. And the wind speed did increase and become rather gusty. However, it never became strong enough to hurl sand, pebbles and tumbleweeds at us (which HAS happened during past visits), and training sorties continued to be flown. We relocated our spotting location to the intersection of Runways 31L-13R and 25-7 --- almost in the middle of the runway and taxiway layout --- and from that location it was possible to get the Control Tower in the background as the warbirds were rotating and starting to climb away from Runway 25.  95v / 5h

About two years ago, I lost a lens while at NFL. There had been only a slight breeze when we first began shooting, but shortly after noon the wind shifted and began blowing much more strongly. We tried to "ride out" the wind but as I uncovered my camera lens to click an arriving Super Bug, a powerful gust blew sand and even some larger size pebbles ... and my lens suffered two 'hits." One hit chipped the lens at the 7 o'clock position; the other left a scratch. The lens was still useable but it was a pain in the behind to have to use PS to Spot Heal every pic I took after that, and I rapidly got tired of doing that so I just went out and got a new lens. Lesson Learned ...

Sad Story about the lens Gary.............
In the area of film my Nikkormat FT-2 camera had a Nikon lens. My tripod fell over while I was taking a pic of...what else... a steam locomotive at night. The lens hit the pavement...the plastic edge was chipped...but no damage to the glass.

This is a way underrated photo on Flightaware. This should have been a very top pic of the week.

Agreed all comments great snapper Gman....( Tumbleweed LOL) been funny to post one of those mid-air on its way to you....5x fer sure and 5 for the Tower,,,the ATC guys and Gals may need a poster for the room!
