The exercise was held over a four-hour time frame and was conducted in two segments. The first portion was designed to practice the initial response to the scene and focused on approaching the site expeditiously but safely and then employing the fire suppression devices on the trucks to reduce and douse the fire that was fully engulfing the "crashed' aircraft. The second session again required an initial response (again quickly and safely) but this time with a coordinated multi-truck arrival which not only required suppression of a massive fire but also approach up to, and entry into, the aircraft to assist survivors inside. Both portions of the day's training were quite realistic and included screaming and panicky passengers, burning and heavy-smoke-filled cockpit and main cabin, and severely injured as well as fatally injured occupants. Hopefully, none of this training will ever have to be needed for a real event.
