F-100 Super Saber; used for close air support in Vietnam. A very good close air support aircraft.

Great angle shot, John!

Thank's guys, Yeah, I kind of liked that shot myself...especially the carbon burning smoke! Smoke and Noise are what I miss about that era of fighter jets. You knew you were in for an ass-kickin if you saw and heard that headed your way!
Five (5) squadrons of the "Hun" at Tuy Hoa Air Base, Republic of Vietnam in 1968. Three (3) squadrons of regular Air Force, one (1) squadron New Mexica Air National Guard, one (1) squadron of New York Air National Guard. Carried the load until the F-4 entered the war.

@John Glambone I know what you mean, I was stationed at Clark AB for 3 years back in the mid-80s with RF-4s on station and we had an exercise once with a simulated air attack where they were buzzing the base. Also, unfortunately, watched one auger in on the infield because a mechanic hadn't properly secured the folding wing. WSO made it, pilot did not
Shame on you Doug Irvin, you must have a sad life . . . .

What’s wrong with Doug Irwin?

@keith Brown, hey bud, when were you at Clark? I spent a couple of years there in 1980/1981.

@Doug Irvin - as you know, I have no shame. But what I do have is a love and passion for aviation which I love sharing with others, amongst other things. Anyway, always good to hear from my critics and appreciate positive construction criticisms. Makes a person stronger. I hope you find some happiness and joy in your life. I know it is hard living in life when you are a persona of a biter and critical spirit.Life really is much nicer and more enjoyable choosing to being a happy person, finding the good in people. Better for your physical and mental health. I hope you find that kind of Love, Joy, and Peace in your life some day. Take care my friend!

Oh Harry, yes the Hun was used for close air support in Vietnam, but (and this is to take NOTHING from the guys who flew them) "very good close air support aircraft"? No Way. It is absolutely the wrong aircraft for the job. That airframe is just not stable as low and slow as air-to-mud missions need. When you are under a hundred yards from the target, you do not want a Super Saber delivering the HE. If however, you want to burn a quarter-mile stretch of real estate and you are watching from a hilltop, they deliver napalm well. Most of the time it took them, three or four passes to even find a target and by then Charkie was doing a brisk exit stage left, knowing exactly where they would strike by the dress rehearsal going on overhead.

If I had to rely on a USAF jet I'd rather have a B-57 Canberra. Chuck Yeager's boys could put a 250-pounder within 20 yards of a can of smoke. unfortunately, the AF never volunteered them. But if you had a need, and you had been listening to the "TAC" freq carefully enough to know that a flight of 57s with unexpended ordinance were returning to Saigon, you could ask for them. They hated bringing bombs home.

Good insight @skylab72. IMO it's sad that the BS keeps coming from those that don't fly, never even been inside the TYPE and certainly never been in the theater of operation. Hard to even think of a fighter-bomber in a role best served by the A-1D Skyraider.

67 Vietnam, Phouc Vihn, flew back seat of FAC and seen several F100's deliver ordinance on target. A vivid memory, looking over my left shoulder and notice an F-100 with its nose lit up from 20MM and looking off the left wing and see the ground just being torn up.

As a boy, I built so many plastic models of both the F-100 and the F-86 that I had a mini Air Force hanging from the ceiling in my bedroom. This brings back happy memories of constructing those kits and painting them to be true to the real planes.
