I hadn't thought of that, but it would!

that bird, a piece of junk????

common guys, it flipped over in a terrible landing and did not even break up. that thing was amazingly strong.

The term junk was what got it there in the first place. You are correct in that there was no hull break, but if it would have had the instrumentation halfway modernized, the rough landing that started all that may not happened in the first place. That is old style seat of the pants flying and considering the wx, they were lucky to even get on the ground.
Derg
My definition of "junk" is perpetuated design incompetence. Take Airbus and the joystick control. That thing should have a condom on it..hahaha. Marked with a big red X.

Great luck that all were wearing seatbelts....and that the fire was contained so quickly......

Oh Wayne my dearest friend...we are one...your folks prolly got off at Ellis Island at some point and my folks were scattered after WW2. This is how it is in the former USSR: a lot of the companies are run by people who were in senior postions in the state/military system. In the morning they line up the wotk force and inspect 'em. Basically they are looking for the effects of booze the night before. You think I am kidding? Well I ain't. Haha. I have to blow my trumpet here beacuse a lot of the really good engineers came from Cz and former E Germany. And I am NOT talking all in academic terms..I mean on the ground first principal blue collar problem solving. The kind of stuff that differentiates a bunch of cockroaches in the galley to a chaffed main feed for the ovens. Wayne..I can tell you that the only probs are corruption...no more and no less...son't get me wrong I know a good USA MBA when I meet one...but I also have 'em up agin the wall when they take on stuff they should not. Closets have more uses than taking a crap. Excuse me..but that is the truth.

@ Roland where were you born, I suspect it was someplace in the former Soviet Union, or simply you have no idea what the hell you are talking about, or all of the above. The Lada for all practical purposes in spite of being designed by Fiat was pure, unadultarated crap; how can you say that you prefer it over the VW. And talking about aircraft, if what came out of the Sukhoi, Mig, Tupolev, etc. stables were so good how come they sold nothing to Western airlines. Have you ever rubbed you hand over the skins of any of these aircraft, well it is like rubbing sand paper; have you ever sat inside of any of the fighters, well it is like sitting at the controls of an old steam locomotive dating back to the early 1900s. And I don't want to mention the quality of the engines, they can not be overhaualed, they are dumped when they reach 1500 hours, like an empty Coca Cola bottle. About the electronics, well, they are so "pedestrian" in the words of Aviation Week and Space Technology and so inferior that it is absurd to compare them with what Western manufacturers provide.

Looks to me like everyone aboard (including the crew) were simply 'along for the ride!'

Well, because of the wx, the got down hard and that's apparently when they lost the wheel. When that happened, Jim you are absolutey correct about them being along for the ride.

"The Ministry of Transportation of Kyrgyzstan said that the crashed vehicle was working its last days, with its airworthiness due to expire on 19 January. It was also reported that the aircraft had been manufactured in 1979 and was not equipped with modern navigation systems such as GPS." The last 2 paragraphs in the article. 32 years old. I'd call that a HULL loss. It's a miracle all survived. I just pity the poor pilots that have to fly that junk around.

Well that's what Communism produces-junky aircraft.

Ben: I know many share this view you expressed here. Excuse me but often the products pre 1989 made under the Soviet rule were far from inferior. The MBA cult was non existant. The engineers ruled the day, and if something went amiss on the production line it was often because some a/hole was taking a bribe or some other kind of favour. I can tell you that a virgin western trained MBA is almost as great a risk as any fromer east bloc supervisor. Probably the best example of the soviet ability was and is the AK47 assault rifle and, in aerospace, the the space shuttle launch rocket now used since they retired NASA'a Saturn. Give me a Lada over any VW anyday, any weather and any place on the planet.

Yes, but those products weren't created because of Communism.
Derg
Ben they were created by a "command economy" and not a "capitalist economy" The difference is in the tenure. Capatalist economies are driven the profit motive, the command economy is driven by the need of the community. Now I do not wanna be teaching you on here the differences, not for me to do that. BUT Further reading would be "The Wealth of Nations" by Adam Smith 1776 and Karl Marx, "Das Kapital" around 1850. If you read both of these books I am sure you will see the motives used for resource processes.

Roland: even you will have to admit though, that since the USSR breakup, that it's been about 50-50 on product. The smaller countries that broke off and went their way seem to be doing good, but Russia itself is just too big and there is a bunch of poorly made junk coming out of there right now, and as with these aircraft, they either cannot or will not replace them, and there is no apparent oversight on the maintenance. That "Command Economy" was there and it had an advantage in that one of it's main elements was "common sense" and as you said, Engineers ruled instead of bean counters.
skuttlerats
Amazing everyone survived. Chalk this one up to dumb luck. Period.

As they say, if you can walk away, it's a good landing ! lol
