In today's times , prefixes like 'X' or even "ex" draw attention better . For right reasons as well as wrong ! ;-p
Their pitch is that it is slightly wider to allow slightly wider seats to be installed, aimed at the american airlines mostly.

Can somebody explain why the need for the landing gear to be down so long? I think Boeing did the same for the 787 first flight.
The first flight is to evaluate basic handling and essential systems. Every time you operate a system (gear. flaps etc..) you change aerodynamics and add more variables and possibility of failure.The subsequent flights will slowly add variables and systems so that it is a controlled slow learning process.
