Are we also damaging our car engines by starting them cold when the temperature is below 20 degrees F?

Quick answer is yes. Your car though generally has an oil type that helps reduce the damage of cold starting. It’s still great advise to let it warm and go easy on the rpms until normal operating temp.

Yes! But even if the ambient temp is not cold (even if it is very hot outside), if you car has been sitting overnight or more, starting it and right away driving like a bat out of hell, still puts (unnecessary) wear on the engine. Let it sit for a minute or two so the oil circulates and warms a bit, then also go easy on the rpms for the first couple of minutes after driving away, until the temp needle is going up from the cold point.

As pilots though, along with climbing like a homesick angel, we love going like a bat out of hell. <grin>
