Rolls-Royce considers Airbus Beluga as An-124 alternative

The Beluga is a suitable replacement for an An-124 when it comes to carrying relatively lightweight aero-engines but it is not a substitute for an An-124 when it comes to heavy lift cargo.

The loss of most An-124's for the foreseeable future means that many critical missions will no longer be met. When used to transport heavy outsized industrial equipment the An-124 saved customers millions of dollars vs. transport by ship or rail.

Will we see Lockheed revive the C5 Galaxy for commercial customers? With some modern upgrades it could match the An-124 in terms of maximum payload and exceed it in every other parameter. Does the US Air Force make available for charter any of its C5's?

Unfortunately Lockheed also tried to market the C5 for commercial use and no one wanted to buy it. There ate many times back when I was in the USAF alot of C5 missions have been used and still being used for humanitarian airlift.
That said, MD also tried to market the C17 as the MD17 for commercial cargo. Once again, not much interest. It's really a shame.

Part of the problem is that the AN-124 hauled what can be called specialized cargo. The C-5 and the C-17 hauls some of that. But, most air cargo is flown by UPS and FedEx which tend to use the 747 and DC-10 cargo variants.

I thought Airbus already had a plan to use the A300 Belugas for regular commercial freight service.
