Maybe an actual pilot can enlighten me, but I assume the procedure in such a scenario would be more involved than just "Turn back if < halfway, continue on if > halfway."
If you have a headwind, for example, wouldn't it be better to turn back, even if you were slightly past the halfway point, distance-wise?
I think it was George Carlin who said to be treated as a real country you need to have at least a beer and an airline :)
Seriously, I hope to visit Montenegro some day. I hear they make great wine.
15 years ago I would have strongly opposed allowing cell phone usage on flights, for the reasons others here have mentioned, but nowadays hasn't texting pretty much supplanted voice calls for most people? On the other hand, there will always be those inconsiderate few who will spend an entire flight talking into their phone at the top of their lungs.
It's interesting that, according to the graph, the number of 747s in service peaked around 1997. When I landed in Hong Kong for the first time in late 1994, I remember looking out the window and being impressed that almost every aircraft there was a 747.
Serious question: how do I get on one of these "first/last ever [model X] flight by [X Airline]?" Are they announced on some secret mailing list known only to aviation geeks? Or do I just have to follow each individual airline to know when they're inaugurating or retiring a particular aircraft model?
