Those "D-Day marks", specifically the invasion stripes, are authentic. Great Britain used the Grumman Wildcat in WWII.

I think the 17 may have been used for fire suppression in california and was flown to Great britain in the mid 70s in trade for a Vulcan for a museum here in the States. A neighbor who had been a wing commander in the RAF made the trip.
