United 757 Diverts to Grand Junction After Engine Shut Down

제출됨

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — An engine shut down on a United Airlines jetliner Sunday, forcing it to make an emergency landing in western Colorado with 125 passengers and crew on board. The Boeing 757 was flying from Denver to Los Angeles when one of its two engines shut down, and the flight was diverted to Grand Junction Regional Airport, typically a landing spot for smaller aircraft. I've been diverted to GJ on a UA 757 before.

And I highly doubt they had trouble finding stairs, as one passenger claims. They have no problem handling 757s there.

Rob, the photo you're seeing is simply poorly chosen stock footage of a 757-300. The actual aircraft involved was a 757-200, painted in United's old Battleship grey" colors. Just one more instance of the news media screwing up the facts in an aviation related story.

It would appear from a photograph produced of the landing, that the right engine was an an angle, quite unusual from the norm. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/11/jetliner-with-engine-out-_0_n_1142113.html?ref=travel&icid=maing-grid10%7Chtmlws-main-bb%7Cdl2%7Csec3_lnk1%7C119290

Pretty sure 757's land there during the ski season. Not too big a deal.

Yes, daily B752 arrivals.

Looking back over the years, it's received visits from 767s (B762/B763/B764) and very frequent B727 service

With a 10,501 foot runway, it's not like they had to squeeze it in there. And the field elevation is lower than Denver. This is a non-event.

The local news report indicated that the biggest issue for the arrival was to find a portable stairwell that was tall enough to reach the door.

Daniel, thanks for the information. It is helpful and insightful.

Grand Junction has no 757 ski buses scheduled. It does have Fedex flying daily 757 cargo. We have seen many visits from Airforce 1 and Prince Bandar's A340.

Question: If, as the one report states, trouble began shortly after takeoff, why didn't the pilot return immediately to Denver?

The flight map Daniel included above shows them turning over Blanding Utah.

10,000+ foot runway and semi-regular service with MD80s. Diverting to San Diego would be more traumatic on a single engine.
