Wow. Doesn't AMR have lingering issues with former TWA union employees ? I think even NWA still had benefit problems with Republic Airlines people. The union seniority issues are never pretty.

In further looking at the article, the first paragraph says the employess rejected what the unions had negotiated. It will be interesting and not that great if it goes to Arbitration. If it is BINDING ARBITRATION, history will note that in most cases, if the offer on the table is halfway fair, it gets used as a basis for a ruling and in the end, they will get it anyway.

Seems to me that AirTran people are nothing more than new hires at Southwest. They should go to the end of the line. They should be thankful they still have a job. What does the union really do for them, other than fund Democratic politicians?

Have you flown AirTran? Perhaps if they had been doing a better job, they would not have been sold on the cheap to Southwest. If the passenger does not get good customer service, they will look for a nicer place to spend money.

I agree with " thankful they still have a job" but you are kind of a heartless bastard on the rest of it, and BTW, I ain't no democrat.

I don't think it is heartless at all. Southwest could have expanded and new hires would have taken their place in the seniority system at the end of the roster. Southwest could have let AirTran wither and go under, and the staff would have been on the street. In purchasing the company they will keep most of the workers. Think of the people at Southwest who have pulled hard and helped build the business and maybe have five to ten years and now a large crowd swoops in and sends them further away from the perks of seniority. It is not fair to them. The only exception for any seniority list to be jumped should be in the case of a returning serviceman who has been on duty for his country.

Well, with that explanation it is not quite as cold, and pragmatically you are correct. I guess everybody is thinking about it as a merger, which it is not. I guess SWA is trying to be nice here but they may be getting some pressure from their own unions as well and forced to do it that way

how is it their fault that the company they worked for was bought out? Its not, they deserve just as much as Southwest employees do and the people at the top of AirTran's seniority list are just as good as the people at the top of Southwest's. I see the Southwest unions just being greedy,

Well, the buyout is the right of ownership and it is a BUYOUT, NOT A MERGER, where a seniority dovetail would be a necessity

Technically but just cause you bought someones company that doesn't mean you treat their employees like crap but short cutting them. because in reality they are your employees now too.

It's actually more than just the mechanics .. .Last paragraph .. lists them all which are at odds.

This particular case sounds like a thing between 2 unions, not necessarily SWA. Sounds like sour grapes as one is going to lose out. It will be interesting.

Honestly, I think they should have had all this worked out BEFORE .. the FAA issued documentation stating were one carrier .. For them or any one else

I do too, its not the Air Tran employees fault they got bought out, always thought that SWA employees were better people than this.
