US plan to ban pilots from using laptops, phones
After delaying for more than three years a bill to reauthorise the Federal Aviation Administration, the US Congress appears ready to adopt legislation that would also make several changes in the way airlines operate. However, bill also includes a provision pushed by Senator Al Franken to prohibit pilots from using cellphones, laptop computers and other personal electronic devices in the cockpit while flying a plane. Doesn't this completely contradict the FAA's approval for the use of iPads in place of paper charts for flight planning purposes? If you are given a different STAR for your arrival than what you were originally issued clearance for, you pretty much are forbidden to look it up mid flight.

i wouldn't call him an idiot, he got the voting public to elect a comedian into the US SENATE! who's the idiot(s)?
Nobody in the business actually believes those Northwest pilots were on their laptops, right!?! I think they were sleeping for sure and the laptop thing was a cover story they made up to try to save their jobs.
Imagine that's the case and then just think, we now have a politician putting forth a new law to "fix" a problem that never occurred in the first place!

Does anyone know of the eventual fate of those Northwest jerks that overshot their destination by 200 miles. Capital punishment should be enacted for something that stupid.
