The French Bureau d’Enquêtes et d’Analyses (Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis) has released a report into a near-miss between an Air France Boeing 777 and a volcano. I'm curious why it would take 6 years to finish and release the report the aircraft was not damaged, no one was injured, all the data was available and the flight crew could be interviewed at any time.

Simply put, this aircraft did not know where it was. How is this possible when GPS, accurate to a couple of feet, has been commonplace for many years?

Something about volcano ash and engine intakes..Other than the obvious de-acceleration trauma from a direct terrain impact.
