A United Airlines flight landing at Chicago's O’Hare International Airport slid off the runway Friday afternoon, according to the Chicago Fire Department. Fire officials said the Boeing 737 plane skidded into the snow-covered grass while landing at the airport. United Airlines confirmed United Flight 734 from San Francisco to Chicago "partially rolled" off the runway. No injuries were reported, authorities and the airline said. (www.nbcchicago.com) 기타...

Opps, That's one for this storm lol. Glad everyone is okay thou. If im not mistaken this happen to another United 737 on December 30, 2015 with 164 persons on board. Plane landed just as the city was being hit by snow and it slid off the runway.

One would think that an airline based in Chicago would be a lot better at navigating on the ground.

This is true but it does happen from time to time.

Just proves Southerners are not the only ones having trouble driving in the snow

"It's not clear what caused the skid, but officials say weather may have been a factor."

A truly, truly inspired observation. Staggering powers of deduction on display here, folks.

"In other news--this just in--the sky is BLUE! Story at 11..."

I don't know the specifics to these type accidents but can't the pilots leave the reverse thrusters on longer in icy conditions to help get the plane to a safe taxi speed?

this is a common problem it appears, just as people even with 4 wheel drive cannot navigate ice and snow...and they are not trying to stop in excess of 100 mph or so!

Runways and taxiways need to be clear of snow, ice, water at all times. U.S.Air Force runways and taxiways are always clear unless weather conditions dictate otherwise. U.S.Air Force uses: Sweepers, Magnets, Snow plows,Huge snow blowers and of course inspectors to make sure all is clear. In civilian life pressure is on the Airlines and maintenance of Runways and Taxiways are done in a hurry and not as detailed.

What does a magnet do?

I believe they are used to detect smallish metal objects or even bolts or screws that might be on the runway covered by snow or whatever..

Yes, Mary susan Watkins, you are correct

Peter..i did work at a major airport for more than a few years and even had the opportunity on one occasion to do a "ride along" with the airport operations people to check the runways for all sorts of things (they would go to different carriers every month for supervisory approval and have one employee ride along to see other jobs at the airport apart from the airlines, including rundway and fence checks)we however, were in a warm climate and didn't have to worry about snow plows..mostly rain and an occasional ice storm...

a magnet is a device pulled by a tractor. The magnet is activated by an engine mounted on the trailer being pulled by the tractor. We know that aluminum is non-magnetic. But other objects that are will be pulled up by the magnet and disposed of. Some parts with aluminum are magnetic. Even a small object such as a screw or nut can be sucked up into the jet engine on take offs or landings. This will damage the turbines.I have been exposed to high alerts while in the Air Force.(RED ALERTS).

What is clear is that the 737 training program is the worst in this airline, specifically because it is a legacy Continental Airlines program and conducted as such!
