"landed almost at full speed." I doubt it. It makes me so angry when the media quotes passengers as if they had even the faintest idea about how aviation.
preacher1
Yeah, FULL SPEED denotes 5-600 mph. I kinda doubt he'd set on down that fast. That all must have came from the Breathless News Network. I didn't look at the source but it was either them or one like them. LOL. Unless they are close around or in the industry, ain't nobody got a clue as to what happens on a routine basis, and then when something they consider out of the ordinary does happen and they happen to be around, it's headline news, disaster narrowly averted.
preacher1
Well, if no flaps at all(and it doesn't say), the landing speed would have been hot, but other than that, it really shouldn't have been a whole lot different than a normal landing. Flight crew would have been in high speed with everything happening a little faster, plus a little more work on the brakes and TR's but really no big deal.

Most everyone here knows my feelings on SWA, Personally I do not like them because of their maintenance practices, but in this case I have to ask: "Why is this news...?" This is BS... If every time a CRJ made the news due to a Flap Fail Event there would not be room for any other news stories out there...
preacher1
Well, on SWA, it is not a CRJ, it was a 737, but as you say, not newsworthy. I remember landing a 767 about a year and a half ago with only 10degrees. To say landing hot would be an understatement.LOL
sparkie624
Very True... Makes for a Long Roll out and nice warm brakes...
preacher1
yep, but not having a long runway and it being a tad wet too boot made things interesting. I think everybody has got to do one stupid thing before they retire. LOL

What is news, in your opinion? A plane full of people making an abnormal landing at an airport other than the intended destination due to a mechanical problem is... What, exactly?

Sure, this ain't 9/11, but it's news.
preacher1
Well, to a non regular flyer, it's news. To the fliers here it's just a happening, not uncommon occurrence. Like Tim and sparkie said. A little higher Vref and a little more runway; ain't no big deal but would scare hell out of somebody that ain't been thru it. They'll probably be singing "Nearer my God To Thee".

Then you have not been around here too long... I am over yourself, and you did not read my comment... Just being a private pilot I would not expect you to understand maintenance on part 121 aircraft...

He needs to be educated to whom he is responding to in terms of knowledge and expertise. Hey Preacher how are you doing?
preacher1
I'm doing OK. Got to go down and do a nuclear stress in the morning. If that is all OK, probably surgery in next week 10 days. 7 full days in hospital. Month or better of light duty and no driving at all. Crap, I'll go crazy but then again, it might be halfway nice to get waited on hand & foot. Heck of a note; work your butt off all your life so you can retire and enjoy it and then get knocked down. Maybe it'll all bo OK. Lord's got hold of it.

Hope you do well. Always enjoyed your input... Best of luck!

Be my luck I'll have a male nurse. One of the guys a Church is a nurse down there. I don't know if I'll draw him or not

We who have flown as a PIC know the media is generally clueless, always being more concerned about ratings than factual content.
Media nit-wittery aside.
No Flap or Partial Flap Landings. Just a different procedure, prior to and after touchdown. I don't care if it is a C-150 or B-747, there is a procedure to follow.
The SWA crew must have followed procedures to the letter, it turns out to be a non-event, event.
preacher1
Yep, that's what the pilot's train for and get paid for.

Everybody seems to think that you just sit your butt down in the seat, shove the throttles open and haul back on that stick between your legs, and away you go. Coming down not much different. Just reverse the process. Hell, strap some of them in a jump seat for a few days. Even the best maintained stuff is gonna take a dump of some kind every now and then

Typical over-hyped headline (slow news day?).

KBUR has short runways. KLAX has long runways. Simple.
sparkie624
QRH - Land Nearest Suitable - That is they way it works... No Headlines Needed.
tduggan2010
Well, yes in RE: the QRH. But, for a flap problem, we are looking at landing with a non-normal setting...IOW, less than 30 or 40 degrees (for the B737). This simply means a higher Vref, which means a need for more pavement (landing length and rollout).

How is this headline over-hyped? Looks to me like it sums up exactly what happened. A plane diverted with a flap problem.
sparkie624
Just by being news in the first place... It is just as much news as a headline that would read "Cop Caught In Doughnut Shop"... Kind of like DUH.. It is not news.
