The nose-down attitude on touchdown wasn't caused by "gusts" but by the PF adding too much to the approach V Ref. You should only add half the factor, not the whole thing. This flying transgression was committed out of an abundance of caution, but this "abundance" backfired on the crew. The nose gear is not stressed for this kind of impact, and relevant protocols will call for a thorough inspection and possible replacement of the whole assembly, if not major parts of it.

How does a pilot make that mistake though? I wonder if they were borderline on the stall speed given they were repositioning an empty plane...

Pilots landing in Madeira, are by Law Captains, with special training and expertise. Don't you think they'd know? They landed there 100's of times, in all weathers...

Were they actually using the VREF required for the actual landing weight which would have much lower than normal?

That was an arrival, not a landing.

Go-around out of the question? They missed the landing zone by 2000'.

The Airbus in Normal Law is counterintuitive during an approach in turbulence. The computers are trying to hold a Fight Path based on 1G so they correct the flight controls without a feedback to the pilots. The pilot sees a deviation and inputs a correction that is added to the Normal Law correction. The side stick is obstructed to the PNF unlike the Boeing yoke so the PF is “stirring the soup” and the other guy is just along for the ride. I loved the Airbus. Good Times.

Maybe they should have come around again as noted nose down all the way…..

Also watch out for the pay-trial video masquerading as the real article video on the destination website.

Talking without ANY knowledge!!!! How many of you have ever landed in Madeira Airport, one of the most dangerous in the World? Cross winds, downdrafts and updrafts, all caused by the mountains! very difficult, curved approach!!!!

I have some 50 landings there in the 70’s when the rwy was much shorter. (1600m) in good conditions we even taxied in at the first taxiway.
Never have I seen anything like this, ever! A go around should have been initiated before threshold. They were way to high.
